Brown Eyed Girls Gain Thinks Her Sexiness Is Troublesome

Sexiness is always a trend in K-Pop, and many girl groups such as Girl's Day and SISTAR have definitely benefited from their sexy concepts.

4Minute's HyunA and Brown Eyed Girls member Gain are two of the leaders of sex appeal in Korea, and recently former Wonder Girls member Sunmi has gained a lot of attention for her sexy styling.

Recently one of these sexy ladies spoke out about it and says that it actually is a bit overwhelming to be so sexy.

Gain was filming a segment for Weekly Idol when she mentioned that it's actually burdensome to be considered so sexy, since it means that even the simplest dance move becomes sexy without her trying. She demonstrated some dances, and the two MCs couldn't help but exclaim how sexy she made the dances look.

All K-Pop idols don concepts that are suited to their personalities - whether they are edgy rockers, clean-cut preps, sultry vixens, or the ever-popular cute teenyboppers.

While it is likely Gain meant her comment as joke, sexiness definitely suits her and it is interesting to consider that, unlike other idols, Gain does struggle with simply being cute.

Brown Eyed Girls' concepts are generally pretty sexy, and Gain gained international notoriety from her role in Psy's "Gentleman" music video where she portrayed a femme fatale unamused by Psy's ungentlemanly antics.

A woman like Gain, who is so overtly sexy, is definitely appreciated in K-Pop, but it seems like she has a hard time because she is unable to act in any other way.

While sexy concepts are important in Korea, cute concepts are often also important.

Crayon Pop recently did extraordinarily well with their summer single "Bar Bar Bar" because of their concept that combined cuteness with a little bit of weirdness.

Also in dramas and variety shows, while Korean men say that the like sexy women, there is almost always a moment in the show where the females act cute, trying to charm their way into the men's hearts.

K-Pop itself is not a realm where sexiness is overly praised.

In general, the Brown Eyed Girls have many of their music videos rated 19+. There are also rules on some music shows about how much skin girl groups can show and what type of dances they can perform. Not to mention a general cultural standard that veers away from cleavage.

K-Pop is progressive in many ways and sexiness is definitely rewarded with high record sales and a lot of publicity, but it is nonetheless easy to understand why Gain sometimes struggles in an industry where her sex appeal is both praised and frowned upon.

The episode will air on March 12.
