Big Bang's G-Dragon and 2NE1's CL Get Featured On Skrillex's 'Dirty Vibe' And Prove That Their Rapping Skills Go Beyond Idoldom

In general, Korea's music scene is less casual towards cursing than the American music industry. Even while hip-hop and rap songs may include a few curses, those songs rarely become particularly popular in Korea, because those songs are not allowed to be played on the radio and most television stations.

But 2NE1's CL and Big Bang's G-Dragon, two leaders of K-Pop, recently collaborated with Skrillex and produced 'Dirty Vibe.' As the title suggests, the song is dirtier and filled with more curses than any song that 2NE1 and Big Bang have ever produced, even while those two groups are often praised for being some of the more experimental K-Pop acts. However, whenever any K-Pop act tries something new, it often faces a lot of criticism from the Korean audience. But the most recent collaboration with Skrillex, because it's meant for international audiences, allows GD and CL to try something new.

While G-Dragon and CL are considered two of the most K-Pop rappers, there is a big divide between rap in Korea and idol-rappers, because idols in general stick to safe topics. CL, G-Dragon, and several other idol-rappers tend to toe the line, but this is the first instance where any idols take a complete step back from their idol identities and break out. Instead of being a polished K-Pop track meant to become a chart-topper, 'Dirty Vibe' is a dubstep track with G-Dragon and CL rapping and cursing in a way that is more common in American rap.

A song like 'Dirty Vibe' is still not acceptable in mainstream Korea, but Korean rap and hip-hop is growing each year. If idol-rappers are able to produce more songs that contain traditional rap elements, rap may become a more mainstream genre in Korea. 'Dirty Vibe' shows that CL and G-Dragon are able to rap like traditional rappers rather than idols.
