SISTAR Soyou Is Still Evolving

They say that societal structure rests on the laurels of both the forerunners and the supporters. There are those who bask in the limelight of their achievements. Behind those "superstars" who may be known as innovators, inventors, and achievers, there are those who support the leaders to the best of their abilities. It is safe to say that both are necessary, and it is equally safe to say that the unnoticed, unsung heroes also tend to be glorified one way or another through their work.

In a group of four people, it is the leader that tends to get most of the attention. However, for the group to work functionally, all four members need to work together. All four members might be different in their personalities and abilities, but they need to figure it out to gain any kind of longevity within the group. Who will be the one that does all the "dirty work"? Who will be the one that doesn't command the limelight but help the other members become the best they can be?

The talent to bring out the best in others while not basking in the limelight belongs to the second-in-command - the "vice" leader. It is a necessary position in any structure of work. In fact, one would argue that the role of the "vice" is more important than the leader.

That's what Soyou "brings to the table", so to speak. SISTAR's Soyou has been dubbed the "kingmaker" - that is, she has the unique ability to bring out the best in her partner, and in turn she also is able to draw attention to herself. She is not a unique talent by herself, but every one of her work with other artists have been runaway hits. When she is with SISTAR, she is quietly in the background contributing but not being heavily noticed. Her recent collaborations with hip hop artists JungGiGo and Mad Clown were a different story. As she contributed to their works, their music became widely popular outside of the hip hop genre; that is, she was able to induce cross-genre popularity simply by collaborating in their work. She is clearly showing other K-Pop stars that while being a unique talent helps draw attention, being a masterful collaborator is equally, if not more, popular in reality.

When SISTAR first came into the K-Pop scene, Soyou was the least noticeable member in the group. Hyolyn was too bold and too good of a talent not to be noticed, while Bora instantly was pegged the "sexy queen" of SISTAR. Dasom appeared on several TV shows and established herself as one of the youngest and most likable stars in K-Pop today. People were indifferent of Soyou outside of the fact that Soyou had a good voice.

Soyou's talent, however, was too good to be continually ignored. Her voice jumped out to both her fans and the general public through her collaboration with hip hop duo Geeks in their rendition of "Officially Missing You". Her husky but gentle voice was an instant favorite. One thing became instantly clear - Soyou had taken lesser roles with SISTAR for the purpose of being the "sub-vocal". Her voice definitely had the "it-factor".

Soyou's second collaboration, "Stupid in Love", was done with Mad Clown, and her third collaboration and runaway hit "Some" was done with JungGiGo. In both cases, Soyou doesn't try hard to be the focus or the center of attention - instead, she takes the role of highlighting the other stars that she is collaborating with.

She also was favored on the reality program about living with the in-laws. Because Soyou is not married, the program directors made her live with musician couple Jung Hoon Hee and Kim Tae Hwa. Both Jung Hoon Hee and Kim Tae Hwa are two of Korea's greatest musicians. However, Soyou was so amazing in her interactions with the couple that they earnestly wanted her as their daugher-in-law.

The most amazing thing about Soyou might be her age. Being such a mature actor, one would expect Soyou to be much older that she actually is - she is actually only 22 years old.  While many elders say that the young people are selfish and cater only to themselves, Soyou proves them wrong. Perhaps in due time, Soyou's positive demeanor will be contagious to a generation that cares way too much about being in the limelight and doesn't think enough about being a supporter. They say that societal structure rests on the laurels of both the forerunners and the supporters.
