Teen Top's Groundbreaking Concert In NYC Opens The Door For Crowdsourced K-Pop In The US

On Sunday, March 23, Teen Top kicked off the North American leg of their 'High Kick' world tour with a thrilling performance at the Best Buy Theater in New York City.

The popular Korean boy band made history with the show, becoming the first K-Pop group to hold an international concert organized through a crowdsourcing platform.

Teen Top, comprised of six members aged 18 to 21, was the first group to utilize the new Krowdpop website to connect with fans in the United States and Canada to pre-fund their North American tour.

In an interview with KpopStarz and GoodMoMusic after Sunday's concert, Richard Choo, CEO of KPOP UNITED and founder of Krowdpop, discussed the idea behind the exciting new concert-funding platform. "We are taking a very Western fundraising idea and combining it with Eastern content," he explained, and the result gives K-Pop fans in the US the chance to see groups they otherwise would have few opportunities to experience live.

According to KPOP UNITED, with the Krowdpop platform, K-Pop concerts abroad will be more financially feasible for producers, cheaper and more readily available for fans, and an excellent tool for acts from Korea to engage audiences internationally.

"We're expecting to go international very quickly," said Choo.

"I really like the Krowdpop system," said New Jersey resident and Teen Top fan Kadie Casalino, who attended the group's concert over the weekend. "It gives K-Pop fans the chance to voice their opinions and choose whom they want to see in concert."

"It was easy to get the tickets too. I didn't feel pressured for time when I was getting them, and it was really easy to do. I'll definitely support it in the future," she explained.

Giving her two cents about the site and future crowdsourced K-Pop concerts, 17-year-old Lindsay Casalino-Dominguez said, "It definitely inspired a lot of rallying, advertising, and fan support from all over the East Coast," adding that she too would support other events organized in the same manner.

Although their first time playing to crowd-funded audiences, Sunday was not Teen Top's first time performing in the States. This past August, the six-member group was among the impressive list of headliners for KCON 2013, a weekend-long K-Pop and Hallyu convention held in Los Angeles for the second time last year.

But this time around, all focus was on them.

Starting the show off with a rainstorm of confetti and a handful of powerful dance-pop numbers, Teen Top was met by an excited crowd of screaming fans in New York City.

Lasting two hours, the high-energy performance saw members C.A.P, ChunJi, L.Joe, Niel, Ricky, and ChangJo go through a wide selection of their popular singles and lesser known tracks, as well as further showcase their singing talents with a handful of English-language cover songs including the Bruno Mars favorite "Marry You" and James Blunt's 2004 hit "You're Beautiful".

With several coordinated outfit changes throughout the course of the show, Teen Top seemed to channel a fun-loving innocence and free-spirited nature reminiscent of the 90's boy bands in America. From flawless group dance numbers to goosebump-inducing harmonies, Teen Top proved that despite their young age, they are seasoned performers with a lot of passion and talent.

A well-executed performance from start to finish, the group members moved all around the small stage and interacted with the adoring fans, occasionally showing off their playful sides by joking around with each other in basic, but easily understood English.

After the show, 18-year-old Heidy Grullon reflected on her Teen Top experience saying the idols "were full of life and very energetic."

"They came out very strong with their song 'Rocking,' which was amazing," she said. "The ballads were probably my favorite part. They didn't have to move around as much so they could place their whole focus on their singing... their voices came out so beautifully. That totally blew me away!"

Another fan in the crowd, Ashley Inman agreed, "Teen Top's concert was one of the most fun concerts I've been to," adding that Teen Top's renditions of popular American songs were some of her favorite moments from the live performance. "The overall show was just so amazing."

Julie Corneau, a Montreal native and the host of a blog for French-Canadian K-Pop fans, was among the many fans who traveled great distances to attend Teen Top's groundbreaking concert.

When asked why she chose to attend the New York show over the Toronto performance scheduled for March 30, she explained, "I didn't want to risk the Toronto concert being canceled - it almost was - and miss my chance to meet my favorite group. New York and Toronto are the same distance from Montreal and I already had a passport, so it was not a distance matter. I had more trust in NYC getting funded than Toronto... and NYC was the first one to be officially Krowdpopped, so I was happy I made that choice." She also admitted that the weeks spent waiting to hear if the show had been successfully funded were "emotional."

However, there are some significant upsides to the new platform for fans who commit early to such concerts. General admission VIP ticket holders got a special ending to Sunday night's show when they were able to shake hands with each of the Teen Top members in a bonus Hi-Touch event for Krowdpop pre-funders, an experience that was described as "so surreal" by Casalino-Dominguez.

After finally parting ways with fans in New York, Teen Top moved on to the west coast for another concert in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 25. The group plans to continue their North American tour with performances at the San Jose Civic Auditorium on Friday evening and in Toronto, Ontario on Sunday, March 30 at The Guvernment. Tickets for both performances and further information about Teen Top's revolutionary US tour and other crowdsourcing opportunities are available through krowdpop.com.

As for what the future holds for crowdsourced K-Pop concerts, Corneau has high hopes. "I really appreciate Krowdpop's team efforts and work for this event to happen and I hope it can help more fans and cities to realize their dream," she said. "Maybe Montreal will be next, who knows?"
