Where Did All The OSTs Go?

The online music charts are switching up the tops spots on an hour-to-hour basis, but the top 10 songs for the week seldom change. Soyou and JungGiGo, Lim Chang Jung, Busker Busker, 2NE1, Girl's Generation, Sunmi, and Orange Caramel are still in the top ten spots.

Taking a step back, however, to see how the online charts have changed since the beginning of the year points at a glaring missing piece from the music charts - the OST title songs that were such big hits are no longer there.

It is not as though popular dramas just vanished - after all, SBS's "Three Days" is topping out at an incredible 14% TV rating and other dramas such as "God's Gift - 14 Days" and "Inspiring Generation" are also popular among viewers. So what happened to the dominance of OST tracks?

One reason might be a lack of a dramatic and romantic love connection between the male and female protagonists. Whether it was "The Heirs" or "My Love from the Star", the romance between the two lovers was highlighted by the OST. A lack of opportunities within the actual drama to establish any mood through OST tracks is one reason OST tracks are no longer popular among music lovers.

It is true that OST's are getting harder and harder to prepare; that is, with many drama-producing companies still financially benefitting through dramas that have recently ended, those companies are choosing to promote the older dramas than to cater wholly for the new drama. Many new dramas are cranking in before OST tracks and OST artists are chosen, established, and recorded.

Another problem is that OST singers are not prolific - in both senses of the word. When artists sing a track on the OST album for a drama, they don't often go to another drama's OST right away - they tend to take a long time off before choosing to sing for another OST album. This is also coupled with the problem that not many artists are able to sing OST tracks well. Only a handful of singers can handle singing for the OST of a popular drama.

Because of this, many of the top OST track singers are charging too much money for their album participation, which is adding to the fact that a masterful work is not being produced by the OST producers because of a lack of vocal talent necessary to produce that album.
