Deviant K-Pop Stars On The Rise

With all the marquee stars coming back in the spring, no one expected that some of the "deviant" groups and singers of K-Pop would rise to popularity and be able to compete with the likes of 2NE1 and Girls' Generation. Yet despite the comebacks of divas like Lee So Ra, Lee Sun Hee, and Lee Eun Mi, the "weird" stars like Orange Caramel and Bro is holding their own in the music charts.

The "deviant" culture of K-Pop music has to do with artists that seek out the weird and the comical. It's not the cool or beautiful image that most idol groups try to enact, but groups such as Crayon Pop, Orange Caramel, Girl Hood, Bro, and Veloce are gaining popularity by delivering the "weird" to the fans.

Take Orange Caramel, for example. Although they are a unit group of After School, Orange Caramel is becoming more of a sensation than After School. Their dress and accessories perfectly compliment the "strange" and "lame" concepts that they choose to take up.

Their single "Catallena" sounds cheap - it's a disco genre dance song that is married with Indian rhythm. Their motto is "make it lame but addicting", and it's been working so far.

Of course, the master of the "weird" concept is Crayon Pop. Orange Caramel themselves profess Crayon Pop as the ones that they modeled their concept after.

Some groups, such as Girl Hood, were a sensation since their inception. Girl Hood's average age is 34 years old and were dubbed "Mrs Idols", or Missy-dols. They were at a certain point the most searched group on Naver. Another similar group named "Older Sisters" were formed by actress and singer Kim Ji Hyun, Nikita, and Nami.

Bro is a singer of unknown origins who is the latest sensation sweeping the online charts. His single "That Kind of Man" tells of a man's feeling to a girl who demands the world from her man. This single, however, is being accused to male chauvinism.

Some experts, however, point out that Bro is just employing the use of noise marketing - a type of marketing that uses controversy as a vehicle to market a product. In this case, Bro is using the controversy to make people listen to his songs.

This type of marketing is actually an advantage that the "deviant" stars enjoy. Anyone who listened to Crayon Pop's world-famous "Bar Bar Bar" knows that despite the song's simple and cheesy melody and video, it's hard not to go back and listen to it a few more times.

Will these deviant stars become the face of K-Pop? Many experts don't believe so - but the popularity of Orange Caramel and Crayon Pop suggest otherwise.
