Boys Republic 'Video Game' MV - Which Version Is Better?

Korean idol group Boys Republic have taken on an ambitious project with their 'Fantasy Trilogy' comeback started last month.

Mid-February saw the release of "Video Game," the first of three title tracks included in the band's lengthy comeback and two more, of varying musical styles, are set to impress fans by mid-year.

On March 31, Boys Republic dropped an alternative music video for "Video Game" to further express the group's versatility and drive to make music suitable to a wide-variety of interests.

The new music video tells the story of the group as the mature from young, childish boys into super heroes capable of conquering any challenge that comes their way.

In the original dance version of the music video, Boys Republic exhibit their performance talents with expertly executed choreography and already has accumulated over 200,000 views on YouTube. The new story version of "Music Video" incorporates glimpses of the former, but with a much more elaborate storyline.

In the new video, the members are transported into a virtual world that seems to fall somewhere between Tron and The Matrix, but with just enough K-Pop boy band charm to convince scores of fans to watch over and over again.

In the video, as in the song lyrics, the group must clear missions to win the game - a metaphor for winning in the ultimate game of love.

It is hard to say which music video is better.

The dance version gives the still relatively young group the chance to show off their ability to work together as a unit and create dynamic stages of their music for fans. On the other hand, the story version of "Video Game" offers some much needed screen time for the members to stand out as individual performers and wow fans with their unique talents and charms.

Offering such options is just one way Boys Republic is dedicating their 'Fantasy Trilogy' to their fans.

When "Video Game" was first released it was initially done so through the group's fan cafe before being made public via YouTube and other online sources. According to a statement from the boy band's agency Universal Music Korea last month, this project embodies the idea of "when fans' fantasy becomes reality."

"Through the 'Fantasy Trilogy,' we want to fulfill fans' dreams and fantasies," explained Universal. "[Boys Republic] plan to meet fans through a variety of stages during the first half of this year."
