Three Distinct Idol Wars In 2014 (So Far)

Already the first quarter of 2014 has passed, and the new songs released in the first 3 months of the year have enriched the music industry. Idol groups took all kills on music charts, and fought to be the number 1 team on music programs.

The first quarter of 2014 can be summarized by 3 distinct features: girl group's sexy war, boy group's power battle, and the fight between Korea's top two leading girl groups.

Girl's Day kicked off the sexy marketing in January. Girl's Day put on a sexy performance with their title song "Something", which was reminiscent of Park Ji Yoon's "Coming of Age" and Uhm Jung Hwa's "Invitation". Girl's Day been slowly emerging as a trend since last year, and with their recent comeback, they've established themselves firmly as idols.

Interestingly enough, TVXQ had their comeback around the same time with a title song by the same name. Girls' Day and TVXQ took turns taking home the number 1 trophy on various music programs. TVXQ took the trophy home 7 times, and Girl's Day took it 6 times (on "Show Champion", "M Countdown", "Music Bank", "Show Music Core", and "Inkigayo"). On music charts Girl's Day's "Something" preceded TVXQ's "Something". As of March 30th Girl's Day was still ranked in the top 20 on MelOn charts, but TVXQ didn't rank within the top 100.

Girl's Day was then challenged by Dal Shabet, Rainbow BLAXX, and AOA for a sexy performance war. Dal Shabet brought their body conscious look that promoted the body 'line' instead of 'exposure.' Rainbow's unit group Rainbow BLAXX showed off the girls' maturity with booty shorts. AOA members played with their miniskirt zippers for their provocative "Miniskirt" performance, which won them the number 1 trophy. Thereafter STELLAR released their shockingly exposing "Marionette" music video.

The boy groups then entered the scene in February. B1A4 took home 8 trophies with "Lonely". Soyou and JungGiGo managed to take home 10 trophies with their duet "Some". Meanwhile B.A.P, BTS, C-Clown, BTOB, Topp Dogg, Boys Republic, and CNBLUE entered the scene. Each boy group came out with a different concept. B.A.P shed their previous dark and heavy image and adapted a sweet and playful masculine image. Thanks to their more approachable image, they earned themselves the title of number 1 singer. BTS showed off their boyish charm with their school uniform style. CNBLUE rose to the top of charts thanks to their leader Jung Yonghwa's self-composed song "Can't Stop".

March was the big battle between 2 of Korea's leading girl groups Girls' Generation and 2NE1. Their album release, music video reveal, and first comeback performance dates were scheduled then rescheduled again and again. Each group presented different reasons, but in the end, both delayed their schedules. Girls' Generation's title song "Mr.Mr" was released first, upon which it took an all kill across music charts. However, when 2NE1's title songs "Come Back Home" and "Gotta Be You" were released 3 days later, they took over the music charts. Girls' Generation took home 9 trophies with "Mr.Mr," and 2NE1 ranked high on music charts.
