Sangchu Of Mighty Mouth Hospitalized For Injuries Suffered Last Summer

Sangchu of the K-pop duo Mighty Mouth has reportedly been hospitalized for a knee and shoulder injury, at a South Korean army hospital in Chuncheon.

The debilitating injury was suffered by the singer last summer, according to a representative for Sangchu from Mighty Mouth's label YMC Entertainment, in an interview Friday with the Korean publication Newsen.

"Sangchoo injured his shoulder and knee last summer during training and received treatments from the medical corps," the YMC rep said.

"The medical corps decided the injury was much more severe and he was transferred to the Chuncheon military hospital. He received shoulder and knee surgery at a major hospital in October 2013. The hospital made the decision that the recovery progress wasn't good and the injury level was severe and suggested that Sangchu was kept under observation."

Yet, the potential need for more treatment coincided with the substantial blowback Sangchu faced last summer, after he and several other celebrity recruits serving in the Korean Defense Media Agency's now-defunct Promotional Support Brigade were filmed wandering the streets after curfew out of uniform, chatting on their cellphones and purchasing alcohol at 2 a.m. in footage shot for an expose aired on the news program "Scene 21."

According to the YMC rep, Sangchu, who was eventually sentenced to 10 days in military jail for the actions captured on film, didn't want to enter the hospital for more tests, for fear that it would prompt additional allegations he was shirking his military obligations.

"Sangchoo wanted to forgo medical screening and just complete his army duties," Sangchu's rep said.

"The reason why he's hospitalized right now is because his health condition is not good. He's very frustrated with the situation. Make no mistake, he's at the hospital because he is in pain and receiving treatment."

All eligible South Korean male citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 are legally required to enroll for between 21 and 24 months of army service (the length of mandatory enrollment changes by several months depending on which branch of the military that they serve in), a practice that has been in place since the Korean War.
