Anna Kendrick: ‘Little Mermaid’ Spoof On 'Saturday Night Live' A Big Hit! Will “Pitch Perfect” Star Play The Lead In The Live Action Movie?

Anna Kendrick, the adorable star of "Pitch Perfect" and the viral "Cups" video recently hosted Saturday Night Live. One of her standout sketches seemed to foreshadow the Little Mermaid live action project to be directed by Sofia Coppola.

The "Pitch Perfect" star is an Academy Award and even Tony Award nominee, and expectations were high for her first-ever Saturday Night Live hosting stint.

It was a big hit although there were mixed reactions. From Fan Sided, a review of her "Little Mermaid" skit that threw some teen icons like Kesha, Selena Gomez and the immortal Britney Spears under the bus:

"The night started out with an alight spoof on Disney songs but things went way downhill after that in a big bad way. The music video of the night featured the DJ duo Icona Pop along with Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Nasim Pedrad and Cecily Strong to sing about 'dongs' with Kendrick. That right there tells you the kind of night it was as even the usually great quirky sketches fell horribly flat for the most part and things just never picked up.

We saw a Little Mermaid sketch where Kendrick rapped various pop songs to joke about how bad pop music is - a joke that was funny in 1997 - and that seemed to be the low point of the night."

But there were dissenting opinions. From The Big Lead:  "In one sketch the popular actress dressed up like Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaidand sang some songs. Fortunately the movie came out in 1989, otherwise Kendrick + 90s Nostalgia might have shut down the Internet once and for all."

In her monologue/solo song, the internet princess confessed her deep, stage roots: "I got my start in musical theatre. When I was 10, my dad took me to see Beauty and the Beast on Broadway, and I just knew I wanted to be up there, so to be here on this New York stage is so incredibly exciting. It just feels like something out of a storybook."

It could not be ignored that the Little Mermaid sketch was shown at a time when there are rumors swirling about the casting for a "Little Mermaid" live action movie. The project which will be helmed by Sofia Coppola has had Emma Watson circling the lead. Are they suggesting Anna Kendrick? Hmm.
