Fantasy K-Pop Collab: 2NE1 CL + Lorde

By now, just about everyone who follows pop music has heard of Lorde and CL. These two young ladies, aged 17 and 23 respectively, have been making a huge splash on the international music charts as of late, and it seems they themselves are becoming acquainted with one another.

Grammy-winner Lorde, whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, started following the K-Pop superstar and leader of the hit girl group 2NE1 on Instagram, and fans of the two have been going wild with speculation that it is only a matter of time before the two come together for a collaboration.

While there is no official talk of working together in the future from either of the singers' record labels, many fans are still hopeful.

CL (real name Lee Chaelin), who has had a steady stream of big-name collaboration projects in the past year - everyone from Will.i.am to Snoop Dogg and her featuring on Skrillex's latest album Recess. She, along with her group, have been a topic of focus for US music media recently, especially since the release of her first solo single "The Baddest Female" in May 2013 and 2NE1's latest album Crush released this past February.

She is known for her fierce on stage persona and unique rapping skills as well as her dedication to her craft, having written many of the songs for Crush along with Teddy Park.

Lorde burst on to the music scene with her debut album Pure Heroine last September and was praised by critics across the board who applauded her songwriting and impressive vocals.

In January, she was nominated for four Grammy Awards and took home two, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her debut single "Royals." She is also the youngest person to be nominated for the Record of the Year award.

Electro-pop is a common thread between CL and Lorde, but both singers draw on an impressive array of influences for their music - meaning any potential collaboration in the future is sure to be eclectic and well-executed.

Aside from the creative songs both young women are known to produce, there is another element that draws a parallel between Lorde and CL - feminism.

The New Zealand singer is an avid and outspoken feminist, an identity that is apparent in both her lyrics and her singing style which has been affectionately described as containing many masculine qualities due to the wide range of male artists she cites as influences.

CL too, has become somewhat of a feminist icon in South Korea. Last year, she stepped outside her role as leader of 2NE1 (a group that already is a striking contrast to other, overtly feminine K-Pop girl groups) to declare herself "The Baddest Female" and deliver a raw, edgy rap single. CL has thus changed the way female pop stars in Korea are perceived and she has the record sales to prove that the music industry approves.

If CL and Lorde were to come together for a collaboration, whatever the outcome, the track is sure to be an anthem for young women around the world, and one we would be very excited to hear.
