Junggigo Picks His ‘Best Ever 5 Featuring Songs’

If you've only heard JungGiGo featured in "Some", then you only know 30% of this artist's charm.

JungGiGo sang a duet with SISTAR's Soyou called "Some" earlier this year, and has been in the spotlight with this hit song. However, it's already been 12 years since JungGiGo's debut. Although he wasn't very well known until now, he's been acknowledged for his skills in the hip hop scene since 2002. He actively began his solo activities in 2008, and finally shed his 'underground' image with his recent success with "Some". JungGiGo's unique featuring skills will be spotlighted in his rapper project with this month's comeback.

For the past 12 years, JungGiGo has featured in approximately 70 songs. "The friends I used to hang out with all did rap and hip hop. I enjoyed featuring in their music, and played football and foot volleyball with them. And naturally I began my singer activities. From 2002 to 2005, I was the only one to sing in the hip hop scene. Anyway since I sang better than most rappers, they sought me out, and that's how my voice found its way in many hip hop songs at the time."

Of the 70 songs he featured in, JungGiGo only received monetary compensation for 3 of those songs. "I sang with the concept of exchanging favors. I knew well that hip hop scene rappers couldn't afford to pay me, and since I was young I put more worth in doing what I enjoyed than reality. Of course even now I believe it's more important to do what I like than be concerned with the money."

"Some" is the first ever duet in JungGiGo's music career. It's also the first time he had a give and take exchange with a female singer. That's why it's very different from JungGiGo's other songs. He said, "If you've only heard 'Some', then you know only about 30% of who I am."

That's why JungGiGo came up with the '5 featuring best' of his musical career. In 5th place is Epik High's "Paranoia". He said, "It was a spectral dreary song. I think it matched the tone of my voice well." In 4th is Simon D's "No More". "I personally had some not good things going on at the time so I rejected it at first, but I sang in it because Simon D asked me as a favor. It's the story of a breakup, and my feelings are well expressed in the song."

In 3rd is Paloalto's "Finally We Meet". "It's the story about a man and woman meeting, but it's a sweet song that makes you feel good when you listen to it. It's a song that I personally like." In 2nd is Eluphant's "Elephant Plant's Happy End". "This is a song that I rejected 5 times because it didn't go well with me. I looked at their continued persistence, and was won over by their passion. It's a song about graduation, and I personally had a lot of fun working on it."

And in 1st place? "Of course it's the song 'Some', which I sang with Soyou. It's personally the first time I'm singing a duet, and I honestly don't understand why it became so popular. I think it went well with the weather that was clearing up after the cold. More than anything it's thanks to Soyou's being and tendency to create hit songs."

JungGiGo says he learned a lot from recording "Some", his first project after signing a contract with SISTAR's agency Starship Entertainment. "When working on a song, I'm usually the type to work on the melody and lyrics, as well as production of the song. But since 'Some' was a project and it wasn't my own song, I had to work in a different way for this duet song. So at first it was really strange and unfamiliar for me. Even when the final product came out, I wasn't sure if the song would be successful. I received a lot of help in taking another composer's song intent and adding my interpretation to it. The song was completed through the much guidance I received." JungGiGo learned how to do another type of collaboration besides just 'featuring' in "Some".

He also talked about finding his contact with the public through the new music that's coming out this month. He said, "Right now I don't just want to do what I want. I think it's right to take heed to the company's advice and make music. I've entered the market to find my own color and find my sense of contact with the public, and 'Some' was just one aspect of that." JungGiGo continued, "In my full length album I want to create music that my previous fans won't feel objection to, and at the same time present songs that new fans can enjoy as well. That's why I'm working hard on learning right now."
