K-Pop Double-Take: Crush Gets The Vibe Right On The Neo Soulful 'Sometimes' [VIDEO]

K-Pop Double-Take is a periodic column highlighting recent releases that have yet to receive the attention we feel they deserve.

With the prevailing influence of R&B on the K-pop scene, it is surprising how few bone fide neo soul artists that there are on the charts.

A marketing term originally created by Motown record executive Kedar Massenburg, neo soul refers to late 1990s artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell and D'Angelo, who gained major success fusing classic soul sounds with modern R&B.

It is D'Angelo specifically that seems to pervade both the singing and production choices of South Korean singer Crush on his new single "Sometimes."

A past collaborator of Dynamic Duo, Zion.T and Simon Dominic formerly of Supreme Team, Crush is probably best known for his smooth vocal performance on the hit song "Shower Later" by Gary of the group Leessang.

But whether or not you care about whether not something has a pitch perfect 1990s classic neo soul sound (which it does) "Sometimes" by Crush could be the feel-good song of the spring.

It has a vibe that doesn't jar you into an instant spastic state of dance. Rather "Sometimes" eases you into it with graceful string flourishes and a classy rhythm section that still has got the funk.

At the center of it all, Crush delivers some top-notch singing.

Though he is clearly versed on the music his idols, not just of the neo soul variety, but the legendary artists like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye that fed the second generation of R&B artists and everyone that came after them, Crush has something far beyond mere imitation or tribute.

When he lets loose, the vocalist shows he has a set of pipes that rival anyone in the game today.
