Sandman Movie News: Neil Gaiman On Joseph Gordon-Levitt; ‘He Is An Enormous Sandman Fan’ – Expect A ‘Grand-Scale Spectacular Movie’

Sandman movie is on its way to reality? Warner Bros. might just have found its comic-book movie adaptation that could make be the next big franchise in the movie industry with the help of "The Dark Knight Rises" cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

According to news of Badass Digest, sources from the inside told them that David Goyer, the well-known screenwriter of "Dark Knight" and "Man of Steel," expresses his interest on taking the Neil Gaiman comics to the big screen, and that Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be involved in the project. The report made by Badass Digest claims that Warner Bros. "has been very receptive" to the proposal.

On the other hand, Sandman creator Neil Gaiman is optimistic about the movie adaptation of him comic book character, knowing that JGL's involvement in the project.

"Joseph Gordon-Levitt, of all people, is an enormous 'Sandman' fan. He and David Goyer talked about it, they've come up, I believe, with a treatment of what they want the story of the first movie to be," Gaiman explained.

"They are talking to an incredible writer [Jack Thorne], who I coincidentally already knew, because he did the movie script for 'The Ocean at the End of the Lane,' so I've met him and loved his treatment of my work. And Wednesday afternoon I will be spending with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and talking 'Sandman'! That's pretty much everything I know. Now you know as much as I know."

Since the Sandman movie is now on its way to the big screen, producers David Goyer and "The Dark Knight Rises" cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt hired "How I Live Now" writer Jack Thorne on board to pen the screenplay, according to Deadline.

What was not elaborated by the report, though, is to what extent would Joseph Gordon-Levitt involvement be. He either could play the role of the lead, Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams or as a director of the film (as the site considers him to be). It's been known that Gordon-Levitt has made his debut in directing with the film "Don Jon" early this year.

"The Dark Knight Rises" cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt, however assured that his involvement of being the producer of the film will make the movie personified in a grandeur scale.

"I love just the basic concept of it," he said. "just the concept of personifying Dream, along with all of his brothers and sisters...I mean, that's just a fascinating and, I think, a really cinematic concept."

"Sandman has so much opportunity to do something that's on a grand, grand scale," he went on, "but really unlike your average big, grand-scale spectacular movie. I guess that's the tip of the iceberg."

DC Comics and its Vertigo imprint from 1989 to 1996 published the Sandman. It was supposed to be adapted in the form of TV series first by James Mangold where he pitched to comic book to HBO, but to no avail. In 2011 Warner Bros. reportedly approached Supernatural creator Eric Kripke to oversee the project. However, within months efforts and speculations regarding the matter were held up when the project was turned down by Gaiman.

A previous attempt on adapting the Sandman into a movie was made by Roger Avary during the 90's, but it never happened and the development of the Sandman movie has been since a struggle.

Nevertheless, if the idea of a Sandman movie will pursue it may reinforce the comments made by Guillermo del Toro last week to Cinefilos about Warner Bros.' approach to DC Comics.

"We're still at Warner Bros.," the director said, in referral to Justice League Dark "They are making plans for the entire DC Universe. All the superheroes, all the mythologies, and part of that is Justice League Dark. They're planning on TV, movies, and all the media, so we have to fit into that plan."
