Blood Moon 2014: Find Out Where And When To See Total Lunar Eclipse On April 15; What Is The Meaning Of The Dark Red Moon?

A total lunar eclipse, or "blood moon," will occur on April 15, 2014. Find out where and when to see the "blood moon" total lunar eclipse and the meaning behind the dark red moon.

According to NASA, a total lunar eclipse will occur on Tuesday night, April 15.

"This phenomenon occurs when the Earth, moon and sun are in perfect alignment, blanketing the moon in the Earth's shadow," NASA reports.

In these eclipses the earth will block the sun's rays on the moon, causing the moon to appear dark red and giving it the name "blood moon," according to KSAT.com.

The entire continent won't be able to witness a full lunar eclipse in its entirety again until 2019, NASA reports. This means you better find out when and where to catch the "blood moon"!

According to NASA, the total lunar eclipse will begin around 2:00 a.m. EDT. The eclipse will last for around three hours. At the eclipse's peak, around 3:45 a.m. EDT, the moon will enter the Earth's full shadow.

"At this stage, the Earth's atmosphere will scatter the sun's red visible light, the same process that turns the sky red at sunset. As a result, the red light will reflect off the moon's surface, casting a reddish rust hue over it," the website writes.

It's best to find a place away from bright lights (like street lights) and with a limited amount of smog and pollution in order to get a clear view of the eclipse.

The total lunar eclipse on April 15 will be the first of four lunar eclipses occurring in six-month intervals, known as a tetrad, IB Times reports. The next total lunar eclipse will occur on Oct. 8 and the series of rare "blood moons" has led to some to whisper about the "end of days."

For example, KSAT.com refers to biblical implications being applied by some to this astronomical event. For example, Revelations 6:12 reads, "I watched as He opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair. The whole moon turned blood red."

However, the publication reports that students of astronomy will note that eclipses have been viewed with some degree of doomsday prophecy throughout history, as this was a way to explain these dramatic scientific occurrences while lacking the technological information we have today.
