Five Reasons B.A.P Stands Out: Matoki, Experience, Relentlessness, Production, And Age

There's no lack of talent in K-Pop, but some groups go above and beyond the average group. B.A.P debuted in 2012 but they are already extremely popular internationally.

Matoki

Other groups have reoccurring themes, but B.A.P debuted with a comical story-telling concept where the members were actually aliens from another planet, Matoki, planning on conquering Earth with music. TS Entertainment revealed rabbits that match up to each member, and revealed comics, videos, etc. that told a story about the rabbits crashing to Earth.

The Matoki concept that TS Entertainment has used to promote B.A.P gives B.A.P the ability to not only be people but characters, which keeps the fans entertained and wanting to know what happens next in the story.

The Matoki rabbits are a reoccurring theme and provide levity about serious topics; at their 2014 Live On Earth concert, Youngjae and Zelo's rabbits had a discussion about what love is. The conversation was ridiculous and entertaining, while still being about a serious subject like what love is.

Experience

Most of B.A.P has had experience outside of their group's activities that has led to the group being recognized by fans.

The group's leader Bang Yong Guk (BYG) was an underground hip-hop group member before debuted and gained attention for featuring in Secret member Song Jieun's solo song 'Going Crazy.' He followed up with his own song 'I Remember' featuring B2ST's Yang Yoseop. BYG and the maknae Zelo also had a pre-debut project group called Bang&Zelo that gained a lot of attention for its upbeat message in 'Never Give Up.'

Although BYG is the most experienced member of the group, the other members of B.A.P also gained popularity prior to debut. Kim Himchan was a MC For SBS MTV's The Show prior to debut, but he was also known for being an ulzzang (best face) and studying traditional Korean music.

The last three members, Yoo Youngjae, Moon Jongup, Jung Daehyun, appeared in Secret's music videos in 2011, prior to debuting.

Relentlessness

B.A.P brings a lot of energy into every performance. The group is known to not really take any breaks in between production cycles, but instead has already released 13 single albums. This is far more than other groups that debuted in 2012. EXO has released 7 singles, and Nu'est has released only 5.

B.A.P has promoted all of their singles and filmed music videos for each of them, as well as three Japanese music videos. They went on their first world tour shortly after their first anniversary, and are currently in the United States undergoing their second world tour.

Fans have even called for B.A.P to stop promoting, because the group seems to be relentless and never takes the time to rest. But it means that B.A.P is one of the most productive groups in the industry, where comebacks occur at maximum four times a year for the average group.

Unique Productions

Music videos aside, B.A.P's production is arguably one of the best in the industry. B.A.P's concepts are always attention grabbing and their production value is higher than other groups.

Since debut, B.A.P's promoted how bad society is and sung about being strong, rather than the typical love songs by most groups. Their music videos have depicted desolate wastelands and gang turf fights, and also depicted the normal love songs, but taken to the extreme degree where the group traveled across the United States filming 'Coffee Shop's music video. Filming music videos in other countries is becoming more normal among K-Pop acts, but still rare among rookie groups.

Wide Age Range

One of the things not usally considered when discussing the appeal of K-Pop acts is their ages; most fans don't really care. But with a six-year age difference between the leader BYG and the youngest Zelo, the group can appeal to not only younger fans but also older ones.

Most idol groups debuting have young idols, so that their careers can last longer, but BYG is 24 (26 in Korea.) By having a leader who is as old or older than many other popular idols, B.A.P immediately receives some respect in Korea's age-based society, while still retaining its young, energetic image.

The wide age difference also gives B.A.P different perspectives, that is often lost in groups where the members are around similar ages and of the same generation.
