Here’s The Scoop On Why Trot Is Hot

The trot genre is making a huge comeback. It's quite a sight to see trot-related content aimed at a young fanbase. Trot is currently combining with a variety of genres and transforming into something new.

Mnet's trot variety show "Trot X" is currently on the air. Trot representative singers Tae Jin Ah and Seol Woon Do, as well as newer trot singers such as Hong Jin Young and Park Hyun Bin, and other singers such as Park Myung Soo, Yoo Se Yoon, and Ivy will be acting as trotducers (trot + producers) on the show. They're looking to bring about a revival of trot, and bringing something quite new to the table.

On the show, participants are made up of general public members, anonymous singers, and singers that were popular in the 90's, such as Shim Shin and Kim Sung Soo. These participants are reinterpreting the trot genre and are bringing fun to the stage. This trot-based entertainment program appeals to trot lovers and even those who previously had no interest in trot before with this new type of concept.

Even in the music industry trot has been rising steadily. At the center is Jang Yoon Jung, who appealed to a young fan base with her fun trot song "Omona" (aka "Oh My!"). The baton was then passed onto the 'mother's idol' Park Hyun Bin, who sang "Shabang Shabang," and sexy trot singer Hong Jin Young, who sang "Love Battery." And let's not forget about Crayon Pop, who appealed to teen fans with their new song "Uh-ee!"

Crayon Pop made trot even more exciting with their white linen clothes and chicken leg dance, and are currently being spotlighted for taking part in a variety of genres with their music. Thanks to Crayon Pop's new trot song, they have exposed their younger fans to trot, and have reached out to older fans with a familiar sound they can relate to.

The trot effect doesn't stop there. KBS is preparing for a new drama called "Trot Lovers," (aka "Queen of Trot"). It's about trying to make a genius musician into a trot queen. It's expected to be a unique story that is told in a romantic comedy.

At the "Trot X" press conference a while back, Seol Woon Do stated, "If trot were to stubbornly stick to its traditional sound, then it would only grow further from the music industry. If trot is to develop and advance, then there must be a new trot environment." Trot is making a transformation as it mixes with various other genres. Trot is hot right now. We'll have to wait and see if the trot trend will continue or if it will end as just a passing trend.
