2, 3, 4 Songs… Why Does YG Release Multiple Title Songs?

2NE1 had 2, Akdong Musician had 3, and G-Dragon had 4 title songs. While the vast majority of other singers usually go with 1 title song, YG Entertainment artists usually succeeds with at least 2 title songs.

Akdong Musician came out with their debut album Play on the 7th. They first came out with double title songs "200%" and "Melted," two very different songs. They then opened up voting polls for fans to choose their favorite song as their 3rd title song. On the 14th "Give Love" was the final selection. Akdong Musician is currently filming the "Give Love" music video in Japan.

2NE1 released their 2nd full length album in February, and chose double title songs "Come Back Home" and "Gotta Be You."

G-Dragon's album released last September had a whopping four title tracks. He chose "Black (Feat. Jennie Kim)," "Who You?" "Crooked," and "Niliria." He performed a different title song for each television broadcast.

If we go back even further, we can take a look at Lee Hi's debut album, which contained title songs "It's Over" and "Rose." Epik High's 7th album featured "Up (Feat. Bom) and "Don't Hate Me."

Regarding YG's tendency to release multiple title songs, Yang Hyun Suk stated, "First off, the title tracks set the premise for the music video. For a very long time now, I consider music videos to be very important. When a singer releases a new song, the first image that they show to the public is vital. The music video precedes the first broadcast, and that exposure is extremely important."

That's why Yang Hyun Suk has trained his agency singers to focus on the music video. Fans in Korea and overseas see K-pop music videos through YouTube and other music sites. The public gets to know the songs through the music videos, which also builds up fandoms. The best example of this is Psy's "Gangnam Style."

"Overseas fans are have taken a keen interest in Psy, Big Bang, 2NE1, and other YG singers. Before music would convey emotions through the the ears. However now visuals have also become very important. Akdong Musician's 'Melted' music video has met with the common response that it's like watching a movie. That's why we invest heavily in music videos that can highlight the songs for each singer's album."

YG singers prefer multiple title songs, and produce music videos for each of those title songs. In their place they reduce their broadcast promotions. Still they appeal to their fans with new content that can increase satisfaction at home and to fans abroad.

Yang Hyun Suk said, "Music videos can exert greater force than music program broadcasts over time. Just as the world is changing rapidly, the system is changing as well. The responses to those changes are big. It's much more beneficial to adapt to these changes as quickly as possible. Even in the coming future YG will continue to invest boldly in music videos and make music known through other avenues."
