Celebrity Spotlight Interview with Rapper Awkwafina

Is it safe to say that 2013 was the year of Awkwafina?

I guess so. But every year I kind of whisper to myself that whatever year it is is the year of Awkwafina. This, sadly, might continue until the year 2056.

In your words, how would you describe yourself as an artist?

This question is slightly difficult to answer. I think art is an incredibly subjective thing to talk about, and it can get pretty obnoxious when artists attempt to explain themselves haha. I think for me specifically, my art or goals as an artist is to relay something real and relatable amongst my generation through the music I manufacture.

When your video "My Vag" started going viral, what were the initial feelings you felt?

In retrospect, it was a kind of a trippy out-of-body experience. After one amazing thing happens, then another, you're mind is blown. But after a while, you are still incredibly grateful but slightly less tripped out when something cool happens. Like all large life events, you eventually adapt to whatever it is and keep moving on.

What are you currently working on and what can we expect from you from this year?

This year I'm working on a talk show and a couple of singles. I'm also going on tour with Deerhoof in May.

If you could collaborate with any K-Pop artist who would it be and why?

Is this really a question? 2NE1 DUHHHHH!

Have you ever had any desire to pursue your career in Korea?

Of course! I just don't think they would like me lol.

Are there any hip-hop artists you look up to in Korea?

Yes, his name is G-Dragon. But also, a lot of artists I look up to are Korean but in America. Dumbfoundead is one of them.

What's your advice for any Kpopstarz readers who want to become a successful artist?

My advice to up-and-coming artists is corny but real -- be original, don't hide, just do it.
