‘Seopyeonje’ Musical Actor G.O. Vs MBLAQ’s Lead Vocal G.O.

Musical actor G.O. (given name Jung Byung Hee) is quite different from the MBLAQ G.O that we've come to know and love.

"Seopyeonje" has made a comeback to the musical world since 2012, and the show contains a rich story and music line, as well as other elements that are exceeding expectations. What's most noteworthy in this musical is the lead role of Dongho, which is played by G.O.

G.O's appearance on a grand theater instead of a broadcasting studio was unexpectedly natural. The MBLAQ member that had stood on stage dancing in a nice suit just a few days prior did not show any awkwardness as a musical actor. "Seopyeonje" features pansori (traditional Korean musical storytelling), as well as pop and rock. G.O. handled all of these sounds without a problem, and attracted much attention.

In the musical G.O plays the role of Dongho, who seeks to find his own voice apart from his father Yubong. However, at the end of a long period of rebellion, he returns to pansori and his younger sister Songhwa.

G.O. put on a fantastic and realistic performance of being sad and emotional. From the beginning of the show, he sheds many tears and appeals the viewers with his sniffling acting. Even his regret and return to Songhwa drew tears from the audience's eyes. The tears didn't stop flowing for the audience during the 2 hour appearance.

Audience members that were unfamiliar with G.O. stated in surprise, "Was G.O. always an idol that sang this well?" But idol fans already know and have acknowledged his skills. He's appeared on MBLAQ's performances, as well as KBS 2TV's "Immortal Song," and was greatly praised for his vocal talent. It's just that there was no tremendous buzz that there were still some audience members who didn't really know about the idol turned musical actor. Those who have heard G.O's singing are already fully aware of his amazing vocals.

One concern was whether G.O. would be able to close the gap between his manly singing as MBLAQ's lead vocal and as Dongho in "Seopyeonje." While it is true that G.O. sings well and is an awesome idol onstage, he's also appeared on various entertainment programs and radio programs, where he's made a fool of himself with his comic side. With just a simple search query you can see how netizens responded so hotly to MBLAQ G.O's gags.

Fortunately for him, his presence on the "Seopyeonje" stage was completely void of any of the comic images. Even if one were to try very hard to reimagine those images, it's impossible. That just serves as proof that G.O has fully taken over the role of Dongho.

One fan who has watched MBLAQ for quite a long time stated, "The type of singing is quite different from that is scene during his MBLAQ activities. When he gets on the stage as an MBLAQ member, he puts on a colorful and exaggerated performance to show as much as he can during that short period of time. But in 'Seopyeonje,' he uses small actions to adequately represent Dongho. He even sheds tears and spills out his emotions, and I saw those emotions being conveyed and shed tears myself."

The musical "Seopyeonje" will be performed until May 11th at the Universal Arts Center in Gwangjin, Seoul.
