Gil Of LeeSsang Departs 'Infinity Challenge' After Viewers Demand His Firing Following DUI Charge

Viewers of the South Korean reality television program "Infinity Challenge" flooded the website of the show's network Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) on Wednesday, after cast member Gil Seong Joon of the hip-hop duo LeeSsang was allegedly busted for drinking and driving early that morning, in the Hapjeong neighborhood of Seoul.

Later day, hours after Gil's arrest, MBC executives announced they were giving into the pressure to fire the LeeSsang singer in what they described as a mutual decision, in a statement released through various media outlets, including the singer's Wikipedia page.

"'Infinity Challenge' staff have now confirmed that Gil has informed them of his intent to leave the show and the staff have also confirmed that they have accepted his request," a bold type entry on the singer's Wikipedia page read, on Wednesday afternoon.

"The staff have also stated that they will continue the show with six members for the time being. In regards to content already recorded, they will go over the content carefully to ensure that viewers aren't troubled by the sight of Gil and they intend to not air certain elements of already recorded content."

Police from the city's Mapo District told the Korean news agency Newsen that Gil's blood alcohol content was .109 percent, more than twice the legal limit.

According to police, the singer was sent home after being charged with a DUI and had not yet been forced to appear in court.

"Gil Sung Joon was caught drinking and driving on April 23 at around 12:30 a.m. near the Hapjeong neighborhood," the police spokesperson said. "He hasn't been summoned yet."

On Tuesday, a representative for Gil from his band-owned enterprise LeeSsang Company, claimed the singer, who lost his license as a result of the ordeal, is filled with remorse for his actions.

"Gil is currently repenting and reflecting on himself for drinking and driving, without making any excuses," the rep said, in a statement to eNEWS.

"He's truly sorry for causing public criticism due to inappropriate actions and disappointing the fans and everyone else who has been showing their support."

Gil's rep said the hip-hop star wouldn't make the same mistake again.

"[He promises to] behave more carefully in the future so that something like this doesn't happen again," he said.
