Return to Normalcy, But Idol Stars Are Dealing With the Aftermath

All three broadcasting companies are preparing to return to normal programming, entertainment shows and all.

KBS, MBC, and SBS are attempting to return to normal programming this week, just three weeks after the sinking of the ferry Sewol. Compared to the destruction of submarine Cheonan in 2010 by North Korea, the mourning period seems rather short. As is the case, many idol stars are still hesitant to come back into the music scene. What's more, there are issues that must be dealt with that arose as the aftermath of the Sewol ferry incident related hiatus.

First of all, many stars chose to cancel birthday celebrations, fan meetings, and concert events during the mourning period - but the financial aftermath of the cancellations are catching up to the celebrities themselves. As concert promoters and event planners have to refund the tickets, they are blaming the stars for cancelling the event and are requesting that the entire contractual payments for the events be paid back in full. The idol groups are being asked to either refund the money or reschedule their events, but as the rescheduling conflicts with the new comeback schedules of the idol groups, it is becoming a difficult situation to resolve.

International packages are also an issue, as many travel agencies have already sold a package consisting of round-trip airfare, hotel stays, and concert tickets. With the concerts cancelled, the international fans have to fight travel agencies for refunds for their ticket as well as the plane tickets and hotel fees. Some fans traveled to Korea without knowing that the event was cancelled, and the feeling of disappointment prompted those fans to show up to the entertainment companies teary-eyed from disappointment and sadness.

What about the comeback dates? Because of the 2014 Brazil World Cup, idol groups are mostly shutting down normal album activities for June and July. This means that all the new groups will be funneled for comebacks in May. The list of May comebacks include YG's rookie WINNER, EXO, Block B, BEAST, Junggigo, San E, Wheesung, T-ARA's Jiyeon, Secret's Hyosung, Fly To The Sky, Lena Park, Yang Hee Eun, and Kim Jin Ho.

Idol groups are also facing difficulty with the actual performance or music video of their comeback songs and albums. One singer's music video was filmed in an over-sized fish tank with the water leaking out. The entire music video had to be re-shot, and it will delay that singer's comeback. One group's music video was filmed on a boat, so the entire music video had to be scrapped.

Even if the broadcasting companies are returning to normalcy, idol groups have to take careful steps to making their comebacks. It is hindering promotions and advertisements as well, and it is proving a difficult situation for many groups.
