From Chinese ‘Dad Where Are We Going’ To Indonesian ‘My Love From The Star,’ Korean Content Globalization

Korean entertainment and dramas are receiving hot responses from other foreign countries, where they are being remade. However, some have not formally purchased the right to the program, and yet are copying the same format, which is posing a problem.

On April 30th the Indonesian version of "My Love from the Star" was produced. The drama was titled "Kau Yang Berasal Dari Bintang."

According to reports, the Indonesian drama has the same storyline as the Korean version, in which an alien came to live on earth. Even the characters are very similar. This Indonesian drama was revealed on YouTube, too. It tells the story of the male lead character, who saves a girl in danger. The girl happens to look like a girl he met 400 years prior. The girl then goes on to become a top star, and becomes neighbors with the male character. Even the scene in which the lead male gives a present to the girl 400 years ago is almost identical.

However, according to SBS Contents Hub, this Indonesian version of "My Love from the Star" is not a remake, but rather just plagiarism. It was revealed that SBS was currently discussing selling formal rights to another company in Indonesia. Response measures are being sought.

There was a show in China that aired on Hunan TV with a concept that was very similar to tvN's entertainment program "Sisters Over Flowers." It's about five actresses and two male stars who leave on a trip. Since the show didn't purchase rights to the "Sisters Over Flowers" format, it will be difficult for them to fight plagiarism allegations.

In 2012 Shandong TV in China also introduced a program very similar to KBS2's "Immortal Song." The MC chooses the order of the singers by picking a ball, and shows the singers in the waiting room. After they sing their songs, the singers await their scores. It's very similar to "Immortal Song."

Not only that, there's a Chinese entertainment program that launched an episode very similar to "Running Man"s hanger race game. Even the attire was almost the same, which made it a controversial topic of plagiarism. There are yet even more entertainment programs and dramas that are extremely similar to Korea ones.

In recent years, there has been a growing number of Korean dramas and entertainment program formats that are being used to remake the show after rights are officially purchased. Overseas, they are more interested in never before seen concepts, which are receiving hot responses. On the 24th China's Zhejiang TV aired an episode of a show that translates into "Dad Returns." It is very similar to "Superman Returns." The Chinese program covers a father taking care of his child over 48 hours without the mother. It's a very similar format to that of the original Korean version. Not only that, famous stars made an appearance on the show, making it even more popular.

Not only that, there have been other shows that are similar to MBC's "Dad Where Are We Going," KBS 2TV's Immortal Song," and tvN's "The Genius."

It's interesting to note that tvN drama "Nine" will be remade in America. Fake Empire Entertainment has taken over production, and it's very likely that the show will air on ABC. Previously Thailand produced remakes of KBS dramas "Full House" and "Autumn in My Heart." JTBC dramas "A Wife's Credentials" and "Thorn Flower" are currently being remade in China.
