EXO Members Reeling From Kris's Decision To Terminate His Contract With Band's Label S.M. Entertainment

It hasn't been an easy month for the members of EXO.

On Thursday, just days after the group had resumed promotions for their new album "Overdose," delayed due to the Sewol ferry disaster, a Chinese news agency reported that bandmember Kris Wu Yifan, known to EXO fans as simply Kris, was terminating his contract with SM Entertainment.

"A suit regarding the termination of the contract has been submitted under Kris's Chinese name on May 15," an officer of the court told the publication 10Asia.

"As it has just been submitted today, it has not been completely processed through the system."

Record label executives at SM appeared to be taken aback by the news.

"We are trying to confirm the facts regarding the lawsuit requesting for the termination of Kris' contract," read a company statement to the website allkpop.

"It is a very shocking issue, but we will do our best so that EXO's activities will go on, smoothly."

According to EXO frontman Kim "Suho" Joon Myung, the other 11 members of the group were confused by Kris's decision to end his contract with SM.

"All of the members had a conversation," Suho told the news agency OSEN, backstage for an EXO-K appearance on the cable music program "M! Countdown."

"We don't understand Kris' actions at all. Everyone was caught off guard and has mixed feelings."

The frontman himself apparently wasn't conflicted about Kris's behavior.

"I think Kris's actions are irresponsible and show that he isn't thinking about EXO at all," Suho said. "Our members and record label have no issues with him. What Kris needs to do right now is take back the lawsuit and apologize to the members and to the label."

EXO, which is comprised of the sub-units EXO-K and EXO-M, has South Korean, Canadian and Chinese members. Kris is currently a member of Exo-M.

After EXO-K won the trophy for their performance of the title track off of "Overdose" in the "M! Countdown" episode, some viewers interpreted Suho's acceptance speech as a thinly veiled attack on Kris's contract termination lawsuit.

"I sincerely love the EXO members," he said. "Our motto is, 'we are one.' And like the motto says, we'll become a band that thinks about each other and our fans, instead of just our individual selves."
