[Idols On TV] Why Is 'Roommates' Failing With Ratings In Korea?

The SBS variety program "Roommates" witnessed its lowest ratings on June 1. The program which theoretically should be a ratings hit, has received low ratings from viewers in Korea.

Although, the program receives attention due to its cast which includes 2NE1 Park Bom and EXO Chanyeol, this has not been enough to reel in domestic audiences.

With its scripted love lines and formatting that is more reminiscent of American programs like "The Real World", "Roommates" has attracted loyal intenational fans.

American viewers, in particular, were partially responsible for the program to be hosted on DramaFever and Hulu. However, "Roommates" is yielding abysmal ratings at home.

The program debuted on May 4, however, ratings for the show have dropped from its high of 6.8 to 5.4 on June 1.

Many Korean audiences have sited that the forced lovelines in the program and the editing have led to low ratings.

On June 1, the highlight of the program was a confessional outtake scene in which Park Bom broke down in tears, after a failed house prank.

While this scene could have been a ratings draw for an American reality show like "The Real Housewives" franchise, it was dismaying for many viewers who are fond of the 2NE1 vocalist.

"Roommates" placed last within its time slot, which is dominated by variety powerhouses such as "Real Man" and "1 Night, 2 Days".

Perhaps, in future episodes, the focus of "Roommates" will return to the lightheartedness which initially drew fans.
