‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Emma Stone Weight Loss 2014: Gaining Pounds Is ‘A Struggle,’ Talks Body Image After Boyfriend Andrew Garfield Sexist Comment Controversy

"Amazing Spider-Man 2" actress Emma Stone took weight loss rumors head on in a new interview with Seventeen magazine. Emma Stone talked about her body image and shared her feminist views, following her fight with boyfriend Andrew Garfield after he made a sexist comment in an interview about Spider-Man's costume.

"It can be really challenging in today's world for anyone, especially girls and women, to feel good about their bodies," the 25-year-old told Seventeen magazine. "No matter how things look from the outside, we can all be super critical of ourselves and of our image in the mirror.

"I've seen articles or comments that have addressed my weight of 'caving to pressure to be thin.' Keeping weight on is a struggle for me, especially when I'm under stress and especially as I've gotten older.

"That's the way my genes have decided to go and things will change as time goes on, as does everything. So when completely untrue statements are made about me or my health, of course a part of me wants to defend."

Emma Stone then explained how she deals with scrutiny over her occasional weight loss and body image.

"When completely untrue statements are made about me or my health, of course a part of me wants to defend [myself]. Thing is, people have a right to imagine what they want to imagine. My job at those moments is to tell myself the truth. Am I taking care of myself in a healthy way? Am I respecting myself and being responsible? And over and over, I answer yes to that question. Then I remind myself to be kind to myself, and as slightly ridiculous as it may sound, to treat myself in the same gentle way I'd want to treat a daughter of mine. It really helps," she said.

"I'm actively working hard on learning to appreciate yourself no matter what. If what someone else says can easily derail you, it means your sense of self isn't that firmly established in the first place. It's an inside job. You're beautiful and worthy and totally unique. People insult each other based on their own insecurities - even though it may feel personal, it really never is. Really. Seriously."

This isn't the first time Emma Stone has spoken out in support of women's body images and feminism. She and boyfriend Andrew Garfield made headlines when he let slip a sexist comment during a a Q&A session promoting "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

After a little boy asked how Spider-Man got his costume, Garfield said: "He made it. He made it with his bare hands. He sewed it... It's kind of a feminine thing to do, but he really made a very masculine costume."

Stone stopped her boyfriend and asked: "It's feminine, how?"

When she pressed Garfield to explain himself, he ended up acknowledging to the audience that "we all have feminine in us, young men," The Huffington Post reports.
