K-Drama Fathers: The Good, The Bad & The Criminally Evil

June 15 is Father's Day in the United States, marking a date when children of all ages gather to honor their fathers.

Korean dramas often feature some of the gentlest male characters that can be found on television. However, there are plenty of K-Drama fathers whose personalities make viewers thankful for their abeoji.

Whether it is a dad whose solution is to send unruly relatives to America or one whose weapon of choice is his cane, K-Drama covers every type of father.

Fathers who make the best of their newly formed families.

The scene stealer of the 2014 drama “Emergency Couple” was undoubtedly the adorable Baby Gook.

The relationship between father and son was explored on two levels in “Emergency Couple”. The dynamic between Oh Changmin (Choi Jin Hyuk) and his father Oh Tae Seok (Kang Shin Il) contrasted with the bond witnessed with Baby Gook (Kwon Joon Young) and Kim Kwang Soo (Park Doo Sik).

Both Tae Seok and Kwang Soo approached fatherhood through non-traditional methods, with Tae Seok serving as a paternal figure to his former daughter-in-law Oh Jin Hee (Song Ji Hyo).

As the former mother-in-laws of each family argued, Kwang Soo provided much needed stability and is an unlikely hero in “Emergency Couple”.

Discovering that you will soon be the father of twins after leading a life of bachelorhood can be stressful. In “I Need Romance 3”, Ahn Min Seok (Yoo Ha Jun) prepared for impending fatherhood by using RealCare Infant Simulator doll which is intended to prevent teen pregnancy.

Min Seok established a routine by using a doll which was disconcerting to Lee Min Jung (Park Hyo Joo), who was dismayed at the notion of single motherhood.

Fathers whose behavior ranges from bad to pure evil.

The SBS weekend drama “Angel Eyes” explored the intricate plot of surrogate father who would soon be a father-in-law to someone whose mother he may have possibly killed.

Yoon Jae Beom (Jung Jin Young) is a complex character which explores the K-Drama trope of the “well-intentioned father”. Much like the “well-intentioned mother”, Yoon Jae Beom attributes his conniving actions to the fact that he wanted the best for his daughter Yoon Soo Wan (Gu Hye Sun).

Yoon Jae Beom also has paternal love for Park Dong Joo (Lee Sang Yoon), which adds to the slightly confusing complexity of his character. While Jae Beom is not an overtly evil character, it is the culmination of his actions which drive both Soo Wan and Dong Joo to resent him.

The nefarious heir Lee Jae Kyung (Shin Sung Rok) from “You Who Came From The Stars” was a prime example of how an interfering father can create a monstrous child.

Lee Beom Joong (Lee Jung Il) indirectly protected the murderer of his eldest son by continuing to aid his middle son Jae Kyung whenever he found himself in a legal bind.

While Lee Da Hae may have played the daughter of a swindling father in the 2005 drama “My Girl”, she is the naïve daughter of a hotelier in the 2014 melodrama “Hotel King”.

Lee Da Hae portrays Ah Mo Nae, a woman whose life of spoiled opulence has ill-prepared her for the harsh reality of a career in business. Mo Nae falls in love with Cha Jae Wan (Lee Dong Wook), a guarded hotel manager whose surrogate father is the vice chairman of Hotel Ciel.

Lee Deok Hwa is the diabolical vice chairman Lee Joong Goo, whose weapon of choice is his trusty cane. Although he is elderly, Lee Joong Goo terrorizes Jae Wan, who eventually extracts systematic revenge against the man who claimed to rescue him.

Lee Min Ho has held the starring role in two dramas that feature some of the most horrific fathers on Korean television. In the 2011 drama “City Hunter”, Lee Min Ho portrays the morally conflicted character Lee Yoon Sung.

Yoon Sung is not easily defined as a “good guy”, having accumulated wealth from shady drug and arms deals through the help of his father Lee Jin Pyo (Kim Sang Joong).

Lee Jin Pyo does not hesitate to show Yoon Sung that he is easily dispensable by proceeding to blaze a path of destruction through anyone who attempts to stop his revenge plot.

Although, Yoon Sung has great love for Jin Pyo, it is not necessarily reciprocated.

The Heirs” Kim Nam Yoon (Jung Dong Hwan) is not quite as evil as Jin Pyo, but is amongst one of the most disliked K-Drama fathers.

One of the signature moves of Kim Nam Yoon is to send whomever is bothering him, whether it is one of his children or his mistress, to the United States.

While Nam Yoon does not physically inflict pain upon his son Kim Tan (Lee Min Ho), he is greatly responsible for his emotional distress.

By contrast, hotelier Choi Dong Wook (Choi Jin Ho) terrorizes his son Choi Young Do (Kim Woo Bin) into submission through repeated beatings and misplaced Tae Kwon Do matches.

Despite their immense wealth, Tan and Young Do each desired the comfort of love.
