Wooyoung is the latest 2PM member to try out a new genre as he teams up with indie singer Lel

On June 9, Korean indie pop singer Lel released his latest single "Fireflies' Glow" featuring Wooyoung of K-Pop boy band 2PM.

Lel is in the midst of a monthly single project, of which "Fireflies' Glow" is the fourth release and the first one to feature another vocalist.

The song is a sentimental pop ballad that showcases Wooyoung's vocal talents in a much different way than fans are used to hearing in 2PM's songs. The two artists reportedly met extensively before recording the track and hoped to bring out a very different side of the 2PM vocalist, one that is in contrast to his typical on-stage idol persona.

The mellow tune calls on the hopefulness of summertime and sounds smooth and relaxed with Wooyoung's calm and focused voice - a very different approach from his usual powerful pop singing and "beastly" dance moves.

The lyrics for "Fireflies' Glow" center around optimism in the face of challenges or hardships and was meant to inspire listeners to not lose hope when all seems lost.

To add a bit of charm and a feeling of summer, and to tie in the song's title, Lel also included recordings bug noises from the outdoors to the beginning of "Fireflies' Glow."

Wooyoung's collaboration with Lel is just the latest in a recent string of K-Pop artists (and 2PM members in particular) branching outside their usual genres to showcase their talents as singers.

Recently another 2PM member, Jun.K, released a new Japanese single, "Real Love," featuring world famous classical pianist Lang Lang. The song is included in the K-Pop idol's Japanese-language EP Love & Hate.

Lel is working on releasing a series of new songs throughout the year. The last monthly single, "Have You Been Well?" dropped on March 28. An equally pleasant indie pop track that is reminiscent of coffee shop performers common around Seoul.
