Casey Kasem Still Off Life Support; Court Denies Request From Casey Kasem’s Wife For Hydration and Food

Casey Kasem will not be put back on life support. The legendary radio announcer is reported to be in his last days in a Washington state hospital, while Kasem's three children from his first marriage fight with their stepmother, Jean Kasem, over control of his health. A court denies Casey Kasem's wife's request to have him put back on life support today.

Jean Kasem, Casey Kasem's wife, attempted to reverse a judge's order allowing Kerri Kasem, Casey's daughter, to remove her father from life support by filing legal documents with the California Court of Appeals.  Kasem's family began to implement medical end-of-life measures. Kerri Kasem and her father's doctors in Washington stopped hydration, nutrition and some medications because they believe the treatment has become too painful for the radio legend. According to The Wrap, Justice Paul Turner quickly denied Jean Kasem's request.

In his statement, Justice Turner said "If the extension of my life would result in a mere biological existence, devoid of cognitive function, with no reasonable hope for normal functioning, then I do not desire any form of life-sustaining procedures, including nutrition and hydration unless necessary for alleviation of pain, or, if life-sustaining treatment has been instituted, I desire that it be withdrawn."

According to court filings, Jean did not believe Casey was dying. Casey Kasem had previously been incorrectly diagnosed as having an advanced form of Parkinson's disease. It was announced recently that the radio voice star got a diagnosis of Lewy body dementia.

When Justice Turner denied the request he said Kerri Kasem was granted conservator status which lets her make all health care decisions for him.

On June 6, Casey's doctors at St. Anthony Hospital in Tacoma, Washington advised that his digestive system had stopped digesting nutrients, among other problems.

On June 9, Dr. Juan C. Iregui recommended that hydration and artificial 0nutrition be discontinued because was worsening Casey's respiratory system.

Dr. Iregui concluded that the radio icon was dying from sepsis and underlying terminal dementia and that artificial nutrition and hydration would add to his suffering. The recommended sedation and analgesia. He also said Kasem should be moved to hospice care.

The court therefore decreed that Kerri Kasem was acting in accordance to her father's wishes regarding end-of-life care.
