‘300: Rise Of An Empire’ Is The Last Of The Series? Sequel Did Not Bring Something New! Sullivan Stapleton Ready For Another Round!

The sequel to the memorable movie "300" was praised for maintaining the level of action and gore of the original. However, "300: Rise of an Empire" was not able to deliver something new which was a big letdown from its groundbreaking predecessor.

While the sequel stood its own in the box-office, it was not met by critical success. A common observation was that it simply followed the tradition of the first film. While that is expected from a sequel, it failed to establish its own identity as a film.

From Cinemalogue:

"It's a big-budget helping of fanboy eye candy in which the action scenes are meant to be so dazzling that you ignore that it doesn't make much sense - or that you've basically seen it before.'

Also from Aisle Seat:

"Seems perfectly content to be a retread of the original, visually and stylistically. The film sticks so closely to the playbook that it never finds a way to become fun on its own terms."

The LA Times has observed that sequels are usually not successful for the 'swords and sandals' genre. Citing the best movies for this field, like "Gladiator" and "Troy" did not have follow ups.

In contrast, they cite their biggest example of a sequel letdown: "The most financially successful movie of the lot, 2010's "Clash of the Titans," took in $493 million around the world but was hardly a groundbreaker. Its sequel, "Wrath of the Titans," was epic, but only in the failing sense - the movie took in half of the original at home and barely two-thirds of the original abroad. It also set new low critical marks even by the low-mark standard of fight-to-the-death epics: just 25% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes."

But that doesn't seem to be the case. Sullivan Stapleton, in his interview with Deadline, confides that he's ready to take on the VFX program again to bring on the abs: "I can see it has opened doors. As for the sequel, it's a huge story, and those battles between the Greeks and Persians went on for years and years. I hope to God we do another sequel. If we don't, hopefully they put me in another film."

Would YOU watch another '300' film? Eva Green would not be back anymore (her character died, apparently) to save the film-they need to bring something new!
