2NE1 Park Bom Allegedly Caught Smuggling Drugs In 2010, YG CEO Yang Hyun Suk Explains Situation

Korean media is saying that Park Bom of 2NE1 was smuggling drugs in 2010.

On June 30, The Segye Ilbo released an exclusive report that alleged Park Bom of smuggling drugs in 2010. However, there is a bit of confusion and oddity in the accusations.

The report said that Park Bom tried to smuggle amphetamine from the United States into South Korea in 2010, via mail. However, the package was screened at Incheon International Airport, and the drugs were discovered.

Although Park Bom's case was registered with prosecutors at the time, The Segye Ilbo explained that the case was suspended- there would be no investigation or punishment for the crime.

Amphetamine is closely related to methamphetamine, which is illegal in many countries. Amphetamine is often used to enhance performance and alertness, so has been used to treat ADHD. However, it is also abused as a recreational drug, and its use is prohibited by sporting events.

It is possible that Park Bom may have had a prescription for the drug from the United States, possibly allowing her off on the charges. However, that would not have stopped formally booking Park Bom in South Korea.

YG Entertainment announced that it was holding an emergency meeting to look into the matter, but has yet to make a statement. The company has said "we are checking."

This isn't the first time that YG Entertainment has had problem with drugs. G-Dragon was caught smoking marijuana in 2010.

The whole situation doesn't add up for many onlookers, especially considering the timing. If Park Bom was investigated in 2010, it's confusing as to why nothing was revealed earlier. The fact that The Segye Ilbo released the article right now is a bit odd.

Additionally, the fact that the investigation was not investigated but instead suspended has many people confused about why Park Bom wasn't booked on any crime.

Some Korean netizens are speculating that the scandal that this news will bring is meant to overshadow the court proceedings of the Sewol ferry court case, meaning that someone leaked the long-delayed news on purpose.

YG Entertainment has managed to avoid scandals recently, while both of their major competitors, SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment, have lost face for being linked to tax audits (SM) and the Sewol Ferry tragedy (JYP.)

The Korean media tends to pounce on any scandal relating to popular idols, so it may very well turn out that Park Bom was taking a prescription rather than smuggling drugs, and this whole thing will be left behind.

Update: YG Entertainment's CEO, Yang Hyun Suk posted an explanation that revealed Park Bom has suffered from an incident when she was younger. The pills were perscribed, and the singer had been unaware that amphetamine was illegal to bring in to Korea.
