K-Pop Music Video Reactions Unite The International Hallyu Experience

International K-Pop fans are becoming more united than ever and music video (MV) reactions are playing a major role in bringing the community together. The MV reaction scene, specifically on YouTube, ushers in hundreds and thousands of views, establishing larger fandoms for both K-Pop idols and YouTube personalities alike.

An MV reaction is a fan-recorded video reaction to a K-Pop group's music video or a live performance, such as a comeback performance on M! Countdown. The video recording features both the reactor(s) and the music video in a screen-within-a-screen style. Videos are made with various computer programs as well as the ReactorTV app, which has grown in popularity since KCON 2013.

The fun kicks in when members of the same fandom watch the reactions and can experience the excitement (and "the feels") along with the reactor. Since YouTube personalities who create MV reactions are located all over the globe, they are able to tap into the hearts of fans in a unique way. Much like K-Pop idols, MV reactors earn fans and supporters who anticipate more entertainment.

Making MV reactions is growing in popularity and K-Pop idols are watching them as well. In fact, idol groups have been known to react to reactions of their music videos! British YouTubers KSpazzing's reaction to GOT7's "Girls Girls Girls" had the idol group laughing and applauding during a filming of MWave Meet&Greet earlier this year.

Kpop Star Season 1 participant Lee Michelle revealed during a fan Q&A with Aewen Radio that she watched many of the MV reactions to her debut song, "Without You."

"Yeah! I have seen reaction videos," she shared. "I watch whenever I have time. I am really thankful about all those stories, comments and expectations towards me."

Although there is not a particular "technique" to creating MV reactions, there seems to be an unwritten code of ethics. Check out some of the do's and don'ts of creating MV reactions by popular duo 2MinJinkJongKey below.
