On July 14, B1A4 released their fifth Korean extended play album entitled “Solo Day.”

“Solo Day” is representative of the collaborative growth of B1A4, as the group develops into one of the strongest male groups in K-Pop.

Although, B1A4 has gained a huge devoted following, their past releases have often lacked a definitive musical style. A lack of definition may have prevented B1A4 from obtaining the degree of success that the group has the potential to reach.

“Solo Day” departs from this sentiment, as it exemplifies some of the best aspects of Korean pop music. The album clearly cuts a musical path for B1A4, rather than appearing to imitate the music of other artists.

“Solo Day” is the result of strong composition work by B1A4 leader Jin Young, who was also heavily involved in the lyrics contained on the album. Baro also greatly contributed to lyrics on the album and is credited for his contribution on five out of the six tracks. The collaborative efforts of the group are evident within the album. Each song exhibits an earnest spirit and dedication in the creative process.

The album opens with title track “Solo Day,” which borrows on pop elements such as background whistling and a down tempo beat which escalates to soaring vocals at the crescendo. The track sets the tone overall emotional state of the album.

The track is followed by the earnestly acoustic track “You Make Me A Fool.” “You Make Me A Fool” combines complex vocals, elements of hip hop, and the simplicity of an acoustic guitar background, making it one of the best tracks on the album.

B1A4 then transitions to an R&B feel with the track “Are You Happy?” “Are You Happy?” was composed by Jin Young, 220, Brian Cho, and Maxx Song. The song is a departure from some of the more simplistic songs that have been previously released by B1A4.

“Are You Happy?” is another standout out track on the album and is definitely one of the songs that will appeal to a wide range of K-Pop fans.

“A Glass of Water” is an upbeat dance track which helps to infuse energy into the midpoint of the extended play album. It is one of the most danceable tracks on “Solo Day.”

The mood is then brought back to a soulful vibe with the track “Drive.” Group member CNU is credited as a lyricist and composer for “Drive.” “Drive” benefits from jazz instrumentals which match the vocal range of the members of B1A4.

Rap interludes provided by members Baro and CNU help to deliver the perfect sentiment throughout the entire album. Their contribution to “Drive” highlights the evolution of the sound of B1A4.

“Solo Day” concludes with the R&B track “YOU” which features vocals from Sunmi. The song is yet another delightful pop track which departs from the bubble gum genre.

B1A4 make their departure from boy band pop to a more established sound with “Solo Day.” The evolution of the group will lend itself to their longevity in the future.

U.S. fans of B1A4 will have an opportunity to see the band in Los Angeles for KCON 2014, which will be held from August 9 through August 10.
