Album Review: Super Junior-M Henry Delivers A ‘Fantastic’ Follow Up To ‘Trap’ [AUDIO]

Super Junior-M member Henry has released “Fantastic,” his second extended play album. The mini album is a follow up to his hit debut release “Trap.”

The six track album features collaborations from INFINITE member Hoya, SM Rookie Seulgi, and EXO’s Chanyeol.

“Trap” remained primarily within the electronic dance music genre with the title track and “1,3,4” serving as hit releases from the album.

“Fantastic” is consistent with the growing trend of K-Pop releases which have been moving away from bubblegum pop towards to encapsulate more diversified musical genres. “Fantastic” is an album which is worthy of its title.

Henry is credited for the composition of four out of six songs on the album, which benefits from the production work of Noize Bank.

The album opens with the title track, which incorporates violins to create a song which borders on down tempo electro-clash. The infusion of the classical music elements gives the track a unique feel. “Fantastic” was previously released but helps to set the musical tone for the album.

The second track on “Fantastic” is “Bad Girl” which features vocals from EXO member Chanyeol. Chanyeol has witnessed a growth in his popularity within recent months, with the soulful track “Bad Girl” highlighting his compatibility with Henry. Henry and Chanyeol would make an interesting sub-group, like WooHyun and Key’s Toheart.

The album then transitions to the reggae inspired track “Need You Now.” “Need You Now” is reminiscent of the easy-going sound of Jack Johnson or Haha, but the incorporation of hip hop vocals from INFINITE member Hoya helps to set the track apart from typical Korean reggae songs.

“Saturday” is the fourth track on the album and is the most danceable song on “Fantastic.” “Saturday” incorporates the infectious instrumentals and vocals that have helped to propel Henry towards solo stardom.

Henry explores the entirety of his vocal range on “Fantastic,” with the tender track “Butterfly” highlighting his ability to successfully execute R&B songs. SM Rookie Seulgi lends her voice to the track, which encourages listeners to eagerly anticipate her full debut with SM Entertainment.

The album concludes with the equally soulful track “You.” While there are less dance tracks on “Fantastic,” the album provides context as to the full vocal capabilities possessed by Henry.

Henry has demonstrated with his second mini album that he is a K-Pop male vocalist with a bright future and more excellent releases to come.
