The Duel Of The 'Darling' - Girl's Day & Eddy Kim Release Songs With The Same Title

It's the week of the "Darling," with both K-Pop girl group Girl's Day and solo artist Eddy Kim releasing music videos for songs of that title.

Girl's Day released the bubble-pop inspired "Darling" on June 13, while Eddy Kim's folk-pop fusion song was released on July 17. Songs with the same title are common in K-Pop; Girl's Day's hit song "Something" was released around the same time that TVXQ also released a song called "Something."

Eddy Kim's song is the perfect example of the indie music that has taken South Korea by storm lately, practically surpassing K-pop in popularity due to the fact that it can touch a wider range of audience than pop songs do. The summery, happy style of the song is matched with the laidback, lazy feel of Eddy Kim's voice, somehow meshing to create a sound that is both relaxing and sensual at the same time. It truly makes the listener believe that they are Eddy Kim's "Darling."

The song's lyrics discuss how the singer wants to simply spend time with the object of his affection, and the music video matches the lyrics exactly-to the degree that the audience never sees the entire face of the female in the video. There's a lot of sexual innuendo throughout the music video, to the degree that fans commenting on the YouTube page are a bit shocked.

In comparison is Girl's Day's "Darling," which is a retro-style pop song, complete with the four members wearing vintage-styled bathing suits and outfits. Rather than being extremely sexual, like Girl's Day has been in it's songs like "Something" and "Female President," "Darling" blends sexy and sweet to create innocent girlfriends trying to figure out how to appeal to their 'darlings.'

The song brings Girl's Day back to an almost innocent concept, but the girl group maintains their image as sexy goddesses with suggestive dance moves and actions throughout the video. The upbeat melody and old-school sound is appealing for a summer hit, which is what "Darling" is aiming to be.

While the release of two songs with the same title during the same promotional cycle may cause some confusion, it is rarely harmful to either artist. It is important to note this happens to be Girl's Day's second time where this has happened-hopefully this won't happen to the girl group a third time.
