  • Flora Grubb - An attraction for design lovers!

An industrial-grey no man's land is the last place in San Francisco you'd expect to find a lush, sprawling garden shop and true urban oasis. But Flora Grubb Gardens could be in Timbuktu and design types, hip homemakers and people who've never potted a plant in their life would still flock there. Wander around with a coffee from the on-site Ritual stand and survey the endless selection of succulents and leafy palms, ceramics and terrariums, and outdoor decor items ranging from solar paper lanterns to bright-purple patio chairs, to a first-of-its kind heated bench, hand built by Galanter & Jones. Even in the summer fog, you'll want to sit there all day.

  • Take a trip to Heath Ceramic in San Francisco.

You'll see its signature, mid-century-style pottery on every restaurant tabletop in California. Cult followers of the iconic, 66-year-old Heath Ceramics used to have to trek to a dusty, low-slung space in Sausalito for their dish sets, tiles and teapots. But Heath has since expanded to San Francisco's Ferry Building and down south to LA – and now to the burgeoning north-east section of the Mission District. Owners Robin Petravic and Catherine Bailey took over a former linen supply and laundry and turned it into an airy, light factory showroom, complete with a Blue Bottle coffee lounge, which has become a destination and community space for design hounds. Plus: there's a tightly curated selection of cookbooks, gorgeous handmade wooden clocks by House Industries, and weekend factory tours, too.

  • Pudding is not only for eating! Enjoy World Black Pudding Throwing Championships!

Despite the name, there isn’t actually any pudding thrown in this contest… at least not as most Americans know it. The ancient rivalry between Yorkshire and Lancashire is played out annually at the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships by hurling black pudding — a type of sausage — at Yorkshire pudding, an English dish made from batter and usually served with roast meat and gravy. Because who doesn’t love trying to knock stuff down by hurling sausages?

  • Have fun with Orange battle!

In the small town of Ivrea in northern Italy, brave souls strap on their helmets and head out to the main square ready for a battle: a battle with oranges, that is. This three-day-long symbolic event takes places just before Ash Wednesday. The battle pays homage to the insurrection against the Holy Roman Empire that took place in 1194. Participants either team up on carts (representing the tyrant guards) or join hundreds on foot as rebellious commoners. Everyone who plays comes away with a significant amount of bruising, but the victory of the common folk is well worth it.

  • Food mashup: Cheese burger pancake!

The pancake burger is like a mobile version of brunch. Similar to a donut burger and available at the Nebraska State Fair, the pancake burger features a burger, topped with your choice of condiments (like cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, etc.) and squished in between two pancakes. And yes, adding syrup is an option.

  • Deep fried beer

From the outside, these look like toasted ravioli. However, there isn’t any meat or cheese stuffed inside. Instead, you’ll find the taste of beer. There are different methods to frying beer, but a typical one used at the State Fair of Texas calls for beer to be placed in a pocket of pretzel-like dough that's then dipped in hot oil. To remain alcoholic, the dough is dipped in the oil for only about 20 seconds.

  • Try some fried aligator!

Alligator isn’t an uncommon food in the South (it tastes like fish but has the texture of chicken), but it definitely isn’t the most popular protein. Several states, including North Carolina, Nebraska, and even Illinois, have embraced this fried food.

  • Fattening meal - Fondue

Cheese is basically concentrated milk, and contains a very high amount of fat. So needless to say, if you take a bunch of it, melt it in a little pot, and serve it with little cubes of bread, it’s going to be one of the most fattening foods around. At The Melting Pot, a fondue-based chain, one order of their traditional Swiss fondue contains 50 grams of fat.

  • Worlds's biggest burger!

This sports bar claims that it, and not the Clinton Station Diner, serves the world’s largest burger, so it is only fitting it has a challenge to go along with it. The "Hellfire Hat Trick" challenge is so hot that participants are required to sign a waiver before they start eating! The challenge tasks participants to consume one Hellfire burger (think: a 1/2 lb. Angus burger blended with Mallie’s fire sauce, jalapenos, red pepper flakes, ghost chile powder, buffalo sauce and topped with pepper-jack cheese), six Hellfire wings, and one bowl of Hellfire chili all in 30 minutes. The best part? Winners receive free burgers for an entire year.
