K-Pop News Weekly Top 3: JYJ's Alleged Sexism, Red Velvet's Political Controversy, Suzy's Sexual Harassment

Red Velvet Debuts And Causes Immediate Controversy

SM Entertainment fans were already confused when the company announced that not only would f(x) stop promoting "Red Light," but then SM added that a new girl group would be debuting right away. Fans started making comparisons, saying that Red Velvet was taking over f(x)'s promotional cycle. When Red Velvet debuted with the music video "Happiness," it immediately got a lot of bad reviews on Youtube from fans of f(x) who said that the song sounded like it belonged to f(x).

Things became much worse for the rookie group when fans started to point out a few incidents that related to foreign disasters. There were allusions to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as to the 9/11 attacks on New York. Some fans also said that they thought something referred to the terrorist attack on 7/7 in London. The Japanese media and netizens in particular became incensed, and SM Entertainment ended up giving an explanation and uploading a new, edited version. Red Velvet lost 3 million views on "Happiness" because of the reset.

Fans also compared Red Velvet to YG Entertainment's upcoming girl group.

JYJ Came Back With "Back Seat," And Were Accused Of Being Sexist

The lyrics of "Back Seat" included the English lines "Don't be afraid of it, I'ma put you in the back seat" and "you don't have to fight." While some fans found the words suggestive and exciting, other fans were outraged that JYJ would release a song that seems insensitive to a woman's unwillingness to get in the back seat of a car with a man.

Nothing really came of it, and the general consensus to the song is that it's a great comeback otherwise, but unfortunate that JYJ is unable to promote on television.

Suzy's Possible Sexual Harassment

Miss A's Suzy was at an event in Seoul and some pictures were released where it looked like someone was groping Suzy from behind. Fans were outraged, and then JYP denied it, causing even more annoyance. People were up in arms about the fact that JYP wasn't defending its idol's body. But pictures were later released that showed the whole thing from another perspective, and Suzy truly wasn't being harassed.
