Kerry Washington Baby Bump: ‘Scandal’ Season 3 Scenes As Olivia Pope Were ‘Tough’ Due To Her Pregnant Body, Will Season 4 Be Better?

Kerry Washington's baby bump had to be hidden in a lot of "Scandal" season 3 episodes, as her pregnancy became more evident. Kerry Washington admitted that her baby bump and being pregnant made "Scandal" scenes as Olivia Pope very "tough" on her as an actress - will season 4 be better now that she's given birth?

Kerry Washington revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that her scenes as Olivia Pope in "Scandal" season 3 were difficult during her pregnancy.

"All of last season was a challenge for me, on a few levels," Washington, 37, told the magazine. "For one thing, I was going through this amazing physical transition, this physical journey of having a baby, that my character was not going through. And I work very physically. What I do is often grounded in the body."

Towards the end of season 3, the "Scandal" producers had to get very creative to hide Kerry's large baby bump - though Washington was pregnant, her character Olivia Pope wasn't!

As we previously reported, Olivia had to be quite stationary, and instead of wearing solid outfits (like that unforgettable fitted and belted white coat from last season), she wore lots of busy prints, layers, and scarves to distract the eyes from her growing baby bump! Viewers also got great views of Olivia's over-sized Prada handbags, which she would place in front of her stomach in more than one scene.

"That meant I had to figure out how to be this woman while my instrument was changing and evolving every day," Kerry continued about her pregnant body. "It was like seeing the keys on a piano jump around on a daily basis. It was tough for me to even maintain Olivia's walk because of the changes.

"At the same time, everything I understood about Olivia unraveled because of the shorelines," she added.

"The season really broke me. I'm a Type A actor who likes to have it all figured out going in, but suddenly I had no idea where this woman was going to go next. I had to jump in without everything being perfect. I felt like I had been in control playing the character, but it all got taken away from me last season. That meant my acting toolbox had to be upgraded. I had to trade in my screwdriver and hammer for a Black and Decker power tool."

After giving birth to her daughter Isabelle Amarachi in May (with husband and former NFL player, Nnamdi Asomugha), we think "Scandal" season 4 will be even better than the previous season, now that Kerry no longer has to remain still in a lot of scenes to hide that bump.

"Scandal" season 4 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
