KCON's First Night Concert Delivers And Dazzles

KCON's first night concert boasted an impressive line-up. The supercharged sampling of k-pop musical style included a brief appearance by singer and actor Lee Seung Gi and a few heartfelt songs by IU. But the fervor of fans was really powered by the electric performances of  VIXX, B1A4, IU, Teen Top and G-Dragon.

Danny from the "Danny from LA" cable show and Superstar K winner Jung Joon Young served as the night's hosts. After some warm-up opening acts, VIXX started the show with a fast-paced upbeat set. They delivered a smooth polished performance despite some problems with their mikes.

Next was IU who always impresses because it's hard to imagine such a strong clear voice coming out of such a tiny person. With lighting and props designed to transform the arena into a retro theater and then replicate the inner workings of a clock, she performed a set that included "Red Shoes" and "Are You Busy Friday." Her showgirl-inspired performance, complete with chorus style high kicks, fit neatly with the retro theme of her last album, "Modern Times." She only faltered once when she varied briefly from the backtrack during her famous three-note ending. A highlight of her performance was a short but sweet duet with Niel from Teen Top.

B1A4 succeeded once more at putting the boy back in boy band. They showed up wearing English schoolboy uniforms that featured short pants and knee socks. They frolicked around the stage while singing hits such as "Lonely," "Solo Day" and "Goodnight." Then just for fun they playfully sprayed the audience with water guns.

Teen Top provided a contrast to B1A4's  bubbly boyishness with a razor sharp sexy performance. The band's compelling electronic dance beat underscored the urgency of their energetic rapping. The beat was infectious and a few gravity-defying leaps endeared them to the crowd,

But the night's most popular performer was G-Dragon. The mere mention of his name early in the concert set fans screaming. Even before the concert began, a G-Dragon lookalike had girls lining up to take photos with him. But when the real G-Dragon finally appeared on stage, the fans who had until then been content to wave their glowsticks, stood up, and screamed even louder. The audience enthusiastically sang along all the while filming every second of his performance, His set  started with what is arguably his signature song, "One of a Kind" and then followed with "Michigo," "Crooked," "Crayon," "Who Are You?" He also spent some time talking to the audience and his English just keeps improving. This also seemed to make fans happy.

It was an energetic electric concert to crown a fine first day at KCON.
