No More Instant Success for Rookie Idol Groups

"Just debuted? Looks like you're going to have to work hard for another 2 years."

"Instant success" idol rookie groups are gone now. To make a group known may take a few months, even a few years. To make a hit song, it will take even more patience. In that time frame, many producers give up on the group or members give up on the group. However, there is no clean way to give it up. All the thousands of dollars spent on making and producing a group becomes debt if they can't become successful.

The last rookie idol group to hit number 1 with their debut was girl group miss A. Their title song, "Bad Girl Good Girl" in 2010 hit the chart and instantly made them a success. However, the 2 years since then have been a slump for idol rookie groups.

At the end of last year, the three big entertainment companies let out a few groups, SM Entertainment with EXO-K, JYP Entertainment with JJ Project and Cube Entertainment with BTOB. These groups did gain much attention, however they did not make a hit right after their debut. Other artists such as B.A.P, NU'EST, Hello Venus and others are also slowly making their way to the top.

One group that has finally made their way to being "popular" is idol group TEEN TOP. They debuted in 2010 and 1 year and 6 months later they have finally made it to number 1 with their song, "Going Crazy." In that 1 year and 6 month time span, TEEN TOP released 4 songs before making it to number 1. It looks like a group must release at least 4 songs before becoming popular.

Idol group INFINITE has also released 4 songs before their hit song, "Be Mine" came out.

Waiting for that 'big hit' to happen can give the singers and the producers a lot of stress. TEEN TOP commented, "If we said it wasn't hard, we would be lying." Another group commented, "We're ok with waiting, but we don't know how long our producer will be able to support us."

Rookie idol groups that have been out for 1 or 2 years is still on the good side. Singers who have been out for 3 or 4 years are always hearing, "If it doesn't happen this time, you're out" from their producers.

One idol rookie group's official stated, "It is especially hard to keep a group when money is going out but no money is coming in. Sure, if they made a hit song, the money would be paid off, but if they don't, we're just sitting in a mouton of debt."

Another official stated, "Now it's the battle of who can scrounge of the most money and wait the longest. Most of the songs written are similar and the group's skills are all on the same level as well. Being able to beat all the competition and make it with one big hit is pretty rare."

Of course, after all this, things will get better. If you look at if differently, these hardships will help make a group stronger rather than one that had the easy way. TEEN TOP commented, "We're glad that we got to the top going step by step. We were able to focus on our performance."
