Miley Cyrus VMA Win: 'Wrecking Ball' Singer Draws Focus To Homeless Youth

Miley Cyrus may have generated a lot of buzz at last year’s VMAs with her racy performance of ‘We Can’t Stop,’ but this time around, the pop star managed to get capture our attention and get people talking without even performing; and she did it for an important cause. Cyrus won the video of the year award, and rather than accepting the metal herself, she sent a formerly homeless man to the stage to talk about youth homelessness in the United States.

The man, in his twenties, introduced himself as Jesse and explained: “I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared right now.” He described his own experience, saying, “I’ve survived in shelters all over the city, I’ve cleaned your hotel rooms, I’ve been an extra in your movies, I’ve been an extra in your life.” He then went on to explain that Los Angeles has the largest population of homeless youth in the US at 54,000, while a clearly emotional Cyrus looked on.

Jesse concluded the speech by calling on viewers to go to Cyrus’ Facebook page, where the singer has posted a video urging fans to donate to My Friends Place – a homeless center for young people in Hollywood. The star explains in the video that as an added incentive, she is entering those who donate through page into a drawing to win tickets and backstage passes to her ‘Bangerz’ show in Brazil.

Cyrus is clearly passionate about this cause, and she intends to continue supporting it. As she says in her Facebook video, “I’m launching this campaign to not only bring awareness, but to build up funds so we can stop youth homelessness. This is just the beginning for me, we gotta start somewhere.”
