Rumors have been swirling around for weeks now about potential trouble in Paradise between Beyonce and Jay Z. Some even predicted that the couple would announce a pending divorce at this year’s VMAs, in manner reminiscent to how the Queen Bey announced her pregnancy with daughter Blue Ivy onstage at the show in 2011. That didn’t happen, and instead we saw what looked like genuine love and support between the rapper and his pop star wife as he watched her perform, and then went onstage to present her the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award. Could the two-year-old Blue be the bond that holds them together? Or were the rumors of marital strife blown out of proportion in the first place?

We first saw Jay Z look on adoringly as his wife performed a 15 minute powerhouse medley that included all the songs on her new album. As Bey brought down the house, the rapper appeared to beam with genuine pride, in the audience with their toddler. When the performance was finished, Jay went on stage to present her with the prestigious award, calling her “the best living performer,” after the super-star shared a kiss with both husband and daughter. She expressed love for them both as she accepted her award, saying “Blue, I love you Blue. My beloved (Jay Z) I love you.”

Divorce rumors surrounding the couple initially started to take off after the infamous “elevator incident” at the Costume Institute’s Met Gala, in which Beyonce’s sister Solange Knowles attacked the rapper as his wife looked on. Allegations started to emerge of infidelity on Jay Z’s part, and celeb watchers braced themselves for a big breakup announcement. At one point, it was reported that the pop star was seeking divorce counsel from Gwyneth Paltrow, who famously coined the term “conscious uncoupling” to describe her own amicable split from husband Chris Martin. Last week, Knowles family matriarch Tina attempted to dispel the breakup rumors, insisting “everything is perfect,” in their marriage.

Only time will tell if last night’s VMA appearance will put the rumors to rest, and if apparent display of love between the two really does mean their marriage is going strong. The only thing we can say for sure is that the two parents’ love of baby Blue is something they will always share.
