Tony Soprano Lives! Or Does He? Series Creator David Chase Strikes Back At Alleged Reveal Of HBO Mob Boss’s Fate

Did Tony Soprano die? This is a question that will resound until the end of time. For a brief moment it appeared that fans of the HBO show may have finally learned the fate of one of television history's greatest anti-heroes when Vox published a story announcing that series creator David Chase had admitted that the mob boss was indeed alive.

However, Chase was quick to correct Vox in a big way.

"Chase startled me by turning me and saying with sudden, explosive anger, 'Why are we talking about this?'," wrote Vox reporter Martha P. Nochimson of her interview with Chase.

"I'm just curious," Nochimson continued, writing that Chase then decided to tell her the coveted secret of Soprano's fate.

"So is Tony dead?" Nochimson asked again.

" 'He shook his head 'no,'" the Vox reporter explained. "And he said simply, 'No he isn't.'"

The Internet promptly exploded.

However, before fans could get too caught up with theories about the potential whereabouts of Soprano, portrayed by the late James Gandolfini, Chase struck back at the publication, claiming that Nochimson wrongly interpreted his words.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a representative for Chase stated, "A journalist for Vox misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying, 'Tony Soprano is not dead,' is inaccurate. There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true. As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, 'Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.' To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of The Sopranos raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer."

Once again, social media erupted, messages of dismay, relief, and analysis clouding over the web.

It's been an emotional day for "Soprano" fans who, in the end, were forced to face what they already knew. There is no answer. And there probably never will be.
