The German Castle Behind Disney's Castle

In 1869, the Bavarian King Ludwig II, also known as Mad King Ludwig, commissioned a castle that he wanted built high above the village on a steep rock. Little did Ludwig know his castle would not only preserve his legacy in Germany, but forever make its mark on an animated film. Before the construction of Disneyland, Walt Disney and his wife went on a European tour and spent time at the Neuschwanstein Castle. A Disneyland representative confirmed that Neuschwanstein Castle was indeed the inspiration behind the Sleeping Beauty Castle.
