Lady Gaga: 'Tony Bennett Saved My Life'; Pop Star Talks New Album, Working Relationship With Jazz Icon

Lady Gaga said Tony Bennett saved her life when she almost quit singing and shared how their seemingly unlikely pairing works.

People were surprised when Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett first came up with a duet for the latter's duets album but their musical chemistry is undoubtedly strong. And now they are pairing up for "Cheek to Cheek," a jazz record that promises to show a side of Gaga not known to many.

In an interview with Parade, the "Applause" singer opens up about the record, her working relationship with the jazz icon and shares a portion of her struggles as a pop superstar.

"Six months ago, I didn't even want to sing anymore," says Gaga. "Tony said, 'I've never once in my career not wanted to do this.' It sung ... I tell Tony everyday that he saved my life. I was so sad. I couldn't sleep. I felt dead. And then I spent a lot of time with Tony. He wanted nothing but my friendship and my voice."

Gaga opens up more about the negativity surrounding her being a pop star symbol, which comes to light rarely, if never. The statement appears to be in reference to the problems she faced with managers for her most recent album.

"I'm not going to say any names, but people get irrational when it comes to money - with how they treat you, with what they expect from you," she says. "But if you help an artist, it doesn't give you the right, once the artist is big, to take advantage of them."

Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett appears to have forged a friendship as the pop superstar has nothing but good words to say about the jazz icon.

Fans of both Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett can listen to their musical chemistry when "Cheek to Cheek" is made available in stores, as well as in live performances as the duo will reportedly also take the album on tour.
