Review: New Jeon In Kwon Band EP 'Act 2 Scene 1' Finds Former Deulgukhwa Vocalist Still In Top Form [AUDIO]

On Monday, Jeon In Kwon Band and Friends released the three-song EP "Act 2 Scene 1," featuring the songs "Then and Now, Seoul," "As We Are" and "Tears In The World."

You may know Jeon from his prolific musical output over the years fronting the legendary band Deulgukhwa.

Though they were often called "The Beatles of Korea," for me, Deulgukhwa were like the South Korean Journey. They played rock and roll with an emphasis on slow songs. And, like Journey, they were very good at these power ballads.

Listen to the song "March," from 1985, showcasing Deulgukhwa's epic and challenging songwriting. Kwon already had a very mature voice as a young man in 1985. One thing I love, is when young musicians sound older.

In the case of Jeon, it is also exciting to see him still singing, now as an older man, finally sounding his real age. There's a lot to learn and a lot of inspiration to gain from a singer of this caliber and experience, especially when he has so much more to say.

The three songs on "Act 2 Scene 1" definitively prove's career is far from over and that his talent is still at its peak.

The leadoff track, "Tears in the World," is a six-minute anthem featuring vintage tones like a Rhodes keyboard, Wurlitzer Organ and a string section. It's such a lush sound resembling Supertramp or the ubiquitous Fab Four.

The guitar kicks in with one long feedback note, just about the coolest intro to any guitar part Ive heard since Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood's guitar noise in "Creep." Very bizarre!

I am curious why "Tears in the World" fades out during such an amazing guitar solo? I could listen to the guitar player exploring outer dimensions for at least another couple of minutes.

Track two, "As We Are," is a live recording in front of what was clearly an adoring audience.

This track sounds kind of like Santana; It shows that as good as this band sounds in the studio, they can pull it off live as well.

"Then and Now, Seoul" is another great song. What a great sound. As soon as the music starts, the melody speaks to me. And there is excellent tonality on this recording. It really fills up my headphones. After a lifetime of making music, Jeon clearly knows how to get a great sound in the studio.

It helps that he is a world class singer whose group sounds as vibrant as ever.
