Netflix In Europe Is Happening; Video Streaming Service To Start in France and Germany

Netflix in Europe had been set as the online streaming service confirmed the expansion of its reach, starting with France and Germany.

According to The New York Times, the expansion of Netflix in Europe will span six countries. And it appears that the welcome will not be warm, if non-existent. French politicians willingly joined their culture minister in regarding the service a "stowaway" as its base is not in the country.

Ben Fu, a partner at Next World Capital - a firm that helps companies branch out internationally - affirms the looming problems that Netflix might face as it tries to penetrate the European market.

"There are going to be multiple wars that Netflix will have to fight on multiple territories," explained Fu. "Fortunately, they already have a lot of battle scars."

"Europe is an attractive market for a subscription service," explained Richard Broughton, an analyst at IHS about the streaming service's expansion. "People are willing to pay for TV subscriptions and are more willing to pay for media in general. [But] it is quite difficult for new entrants to compete."

Another barrier that keeps Netflix from seamlessly penetrating the European market is the language. "I think Netflix will face a much stiffer test in France and Germany because of the language issue," said Toby Syfret of Enders Analysis. "It will need to invest in localized content but the question remains how much and if it can afford it."

But the subscription streaming service reportedly saw the solution to the problem by creating an original drama set in Marseilles.

Netflix in Europe is slated to be the next step for the subscription streaming service to reach a wider audience and to start branching out and stop depending on the US market. It has already set foot in Canada in 2010 and has since reached as far as Scandinavia, the Netherlands, some countries in Latin America and the U.K.
