Ford Recalls Older Escape and Mariner SUVs; To Fix Stalling Problems

Ford recalls have been issued for an estimate of 74,000 units of older Escape and Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs in the United States and Canada to have them fixed of a stalling problem.

The huge number of Ford recalls was prompted by complaints by owners of 2005 to 2008 Escapes and 2006 to 2008 Mariners of suddenly stalling while driving.

Apart from the models mentioned, a recall for a few 2014 Focus, Lincoln MKC and Escape SUVs had also been issued, but no accidents or injuries with regard to these models have been issued, according to Ford.

"When the hybrid electronics system gets too hot it will shut down the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash," Ford said.

A recall of around 1,700 Ford F-650 and F-750 2014 models had also been issued. This is in relation to the cars' fuel filters but the company maintains that they have no knowledge of any injuries citing a problem with the trucks.

The large number of models recalled was attributed to over 50 complaint letters sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration every day.

One of the said letters was published in the New York Times, and stated: "I was traveling through New York City Route 95 during rush hour, bumper-to-bumper traffic," wrote an Escape owner in 2011. "The car for no apparent reason displayed the 'Stop Safely Now' message and the engine died. By some miracle, the Jersey barriers blocking the breakdown lane opened up for about 100 feet and I was able to pull over. Had the breakdown lane not been available there would have been a multiple car crsh with potential deaths. This car is unsafe to drive because you have no idea when the engine will shut down."

Ford recalls will reportedly start rolling out on October 27 and its dealers will issue coolant pump replacements without charge.
