According to Hollywood Reporter, this past Friday "Guardians of the Galaxy" became the first film of 2014 to hit $3 million in North America's box office after becoming the top film of the summer in North America. Furthermore, it has now hit the $600 million mark worldwide.

Variety reports that "Guardians" will make over $305 million stateside by today. Though it is the only movie to cross the $300 million mark in the US this year, other movies have come pretty close as well. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" grossed $259.7 million, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" brought in $244.8 million, and "The Lego Movie" hauled in $257.7 million.

"Guardians" has possibly pulled the biggest box office surprise this year. Directed by James Gunn, the movie was praised for its originality and earned a record domestic debut. And here comes another surprise: "Guardians" has done better in the global box office than the rest of its fellow Marvel movies. According to Hollywood Reporter, "Iron Man" ($585.5 million), "Thor" ($499 million), and "Captain America: The First Avenger" ($371 million) have all been beat by the summer blockbuster.

Furthermore, "Guardians" has also exceeded many other superhero movies in the US. It toppled "Man of Steel" ($291 million), "The Amazing Spiderman" ($262 million), "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" ($259 million), "X-Men: Days of Future Past" ($232 million), and "Thor: The Dark World" ($206 million).

Hollywood Reporter reports that worldwide, Paramount's "Age of Extinction" remains the top leader, grossing $1.07 billion. "Guardians" is currently number 8 in the worldwide rankings, but may soon overthrow "How to Train Your Dragon 2," which grossed $605.6 million.

"Guardians" stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel. The sequel "Guardians 2" is reported to premiere on July 28, 2017. Tim Gunn will be returning to direct.
