Google Android One Revealed; To Provide 'Rich Smartphone Experience' For A Fraction Of The Cost

Google Android One had been revealed at an event in India on September 15, with a promise of providing a "rich smartphone experience" for a fraction of the cost.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the $105 Google Android One is reportedly aimed at providing a more stable performance compared with other low-cost smartphones in the market, with features - software and hardware - created by Google.

Sundar Pichai, senior vice president at Google, said on a blog post in June that the new Android release "will provide smartphones that are high quality, affordable and come with reasonable data plans."

Google reportedly partnered with Indian mobile companies Micromax, Karboon and Spice Mobiles for the project and will release the smartphones for emerging markets, specifically in India, which is the second biggest telecom market in the world but only has 29% of its population diving into the smartphone pool.

According to a report on Reuters, the smartphone and the platform will expand its reach to the Philippines, Indonesia and other South Asian countries after penetrating the Indian market.

The launch of the new platform is reportedly Google's answer to previously released low-cost smartphones by Chinese-manufactured Xiaomi and the new line of devices from Motorola.

According to The Verge, among the many unique selling points the smartphones will bank on are their broader range of languages, a special version of YouTube, which will reportedly enable users to download videos, and a selection of local newspapers and magazines in Google Play Newsstand.

Engadget offered a peek at what one of the smartphones - the Karbonne "Sparkle V Red" - are made of and described it as having a 5-megapixel camera, dual sim capability, 4.5-inch screen, 1GB of RAM and working on Android KitKat.

While the Google Android One smartphones promise being low-cost, some analysts suggested that the prices offered may be only introductory. Karan Thakkar, senior market analyst at IDC said: "It will be interesting to watch if they are able to maintain [that] price band or whether it will go [up] since Google is also specifying the hardware."
